Western Australian new music ensemble Decibel wish to commission singer songwriter Laura Lowther (Kucka) to write them a piece of music! Laura did a composition degree at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts - so she can bring her pop and experimental music together for this project.
The piece will make part of the Decibel concert 'After Julia' on the 20th of April 2015 in Perth, Western Australia. 'After Julia' is a concert featuring works by all Australian women composers that was premiered in Sydney in November 2014 with Julia Gillard herself present. The other composers include Kate Moore, Cathy Milliken, Cat Hope, Andree Greenwell, Thembi Soddell, Gail Priest and Micheala Davies.

The pieces all reflect on Julia Gillard's term as the first female prime minister. A blog on the ABC Classic FM webiste about the idea by ensemble director Cat Hope can be found here.
Decibel have worked with pop musicians before - they commissioned Chris Cobilis, Amber Fresh and Lyndon Blue in 2013. Laura is an amazing composer whose ideas would sound fantastic in Decibel! This is our first ever Pozible campaign so we hope you will support us.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The money will go to Laura directly to fund the composition of a ten minute work for acoustic and electronic instruments. This will be workshopped with the ensemble in the weeks leading up to the concert, and the world premiere will happen in Perth, at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts on April 20 at 7.30pm, as part of the After Julia program.
This amount is based on the Australia Council suggested rate to commission a work by an emerging composer.
The work will be for any or all of the Decibel instruments, and will include electronics. The instruments are listed here:

We have commissioned over 50 new works since we started, and are keen to support Western Australian music in particular. We work closely with the composer to make sure she gets the results she is after!
