Support our Forest Defenders
The ancient rainforests of takayna / Tarkine are under attack.
Without our immediate intervention, the largest temperate rainforest in Australia, the second largest on Earth, will be bulldozed and burnt, piece by piece, and replaced with monoculture plantations.
For three years, our forest defenders have held on in the Sumac, preventing the loggers from moving in to destroy this magnificent forest.
But last month, our rainforest rescue camp was forcibly evicted, and two forest defenders were removed from their tree-sits and arrested.
This is an ominous development which foreshadows the arrival of the bulldozers, chainsaws and firebombers that will lay waste to these rainforests to feed the insatiable demand of industrial forestry companies, including Malaysian timber giant Ta Ann.
Right now, gates are being locked and roads closed to try and keep out our forest defenders and to hide the truth of what is planned for these forests, which are as carbon-dense as the Amazon.
They will not keep us out. We will never abandon these forests.
If these forests are logged and burnt, it will be a tragedy.
Both for the threatened wildlife that depends on them - Wedge-tailed Eagles, Tasmanian Devils, Spotted Tailed Quolls - and humanity, as it braces itself for the ever-worsening impacts of the spiralling climate crisis.
Please support our forest defenders. They are the last line of defence as they stand fast against the bulldozing, logging and firebombing of takayna / Tarkine's ancient rainforests.
The future of these forests is tied to our own and is in our hands.
Budget Overview
takayna / Tarkine is wild, remote and a very challenging place to operate a team of forest defenders.
But with your support, we will continue to meet this challenge, holding the thin green line against the forest destroyers.
We have a brilliant team of forest defenders, including climbing experts, who are using peaceful direct action to help us protect these ancient giants.
With your generosity, we can save these forests.
Your donations will provide our frontline teams with the materials, equipment and resources to stand fast against the industrial-scale logging and firebombing of these ancient forests.
In particular, funds will provide:
- $10,000 to employ a Forest Defense Coordinator, based in Tasmania's northwest, responsible for recruiting, coordinating and supporting teams of volunteer, peaceful direct-action, forest defenders.
- $20,000 to cover legal fees. Our forest defenders are not in takayna / Tarkine to get arrested but if that happens, we will stand with them and provide the legal support they need.
- $10,000 for tree-sitting platforms, allowing forest defenders to position themselves high in the canopy of threatened forests. This will pay for 10 state-of-the-art tree-sit platforms, designed and made locally by an international expert.
- $20,000 to equip and run the forward operating bases required to support frontline actions in threatened forests like the Sumac. These bases need fuel, food, safety equipment, communications, tents, and other accommodation facilities to enable large teams of volunteers to take action on short notice, whenever a threat to these forests emerges.
