Protect takayna/Tarkine
Donate to fund a TV ad—defending Tasmania’s Aboriginal heritage—in palawa kani, Tasmania’s own language.
When elected in 2014, the Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman promised to ‘reset the relationship’ with Aboriginal people. That should mean reconciliation. Instead, he has bulldozed ahead with a plan to expand recreational 4WD tracks across priceless Aboriginal heritage—the ancient middens and cultural landscape of the takayna/Tarkine coast.
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre and The Wilderness Society Tasmania have teamed up to create a TV ad exposing this betrayal of reconciliation. It’s the first TV ad in Tasmanian history to be voiced completely in palawa kani—the language of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people. It’s an in-their-own-words perspective that calls out the Premier’s betrayal of reconciliation, highlights his lack of leadership and showcases the spectacular values of the takayna coast.
We’re putting the ad on TV, but need $10,000 to buy more air time, boost it via social media and produce a whitefella sequel. Donate to expose the Premier’s betrayal of reconciliation and help protect priceless Aboriginal heritage on the takayna coast through this collaborative initiative.
Please give generously - we don't have a huge swag of rewards but we can offer an opportunity to make a real difference in defending Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage and the takayna/Tarkine.
Budget Overview
Your donation will go direct to keeping this ad on TV and social media so it's seen by thousands more Tasmanians, and making a sequel with members of Tasmania's whitefella community for release in the last weeks of the Tasmanian election campaign.
Potential Challenges
The TV ad is done and will be on the air - your donation will keep it there. The big challenge we are taking on is to reach enough Tasmanians to ensure the heritage of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people can be defended — and to pressure the Tasmanian Government to take genuine action to deliver lasting reconciliation.
