Imagine a cabin built inside a gallery. Inside the cabin is a bed, a table, wifi. Downstairs is a cafe and a bar. After hours it's quiet. Windows open out onto Hindley Street.
I'm a designer. My dad was a well travelled mechanic, a band manager, a logistics guy and an all-round handy-man. I had always talked with him about building a cabin together – a place to work, make, think – but time ran out. So now I'm building one in the upstairs gallery at Format Systems. It'll be there for three weeks in October. Artists, writers, musicians and designers can stay overnight – it's a purpous-built refuge for creative souls to work, make, think. Help make it happen, be a part of its story, follow its progress, maybe stay the night, and let's see what happens.
How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds generated will be used to cover the main expenses of making the cabin and pay Format's rent (by way of gallery fee). This amount is reflected in the target for the project. Any amount raised over the target will be used for the other facets of the project (cabin interior fittings, furniture, tableware, guest book).
This project is otherwise being entirely self funded. But any donation will be cherished :)
Target Funding
- Cabin Materials Est $1500
- Format Gallery Fee $500
- Tools and Transport $500
Post-Target Funding
- Cabin Interior Fittings $400 est.
- Furniture $300 est.
- Tableware $200 est.
- Guest Book $100 est.
The Challenges
There have been many small challenges along the way (design, materials, logistics...) and there are more to come (namely the build and transport!) but the biggest one is more of an opportunity – As this project has progressed it has taken on its own meaning and story. The cabin has become a vessel for involving others in the creative community, each input contributing to and enriching the story of the cabin. I would like to think that this is just the first of many - hence the title Cabin No.1.

A Piece of the Cabin
The cabin is being constructed using a unique Japanese process called Shou Shugi Ban. The surface of each panel is charred with a controlled flame. This process preserves the wood and makes it resistant to the elements. This artifact may just outlast me. Or you. Plus it looks real cool, a bit like a charred, shiny version of the monolith from 2001.
