The Art of Lies and Obfuscation
BIO is a woman in her 30’s who has survivor guilt and chronic uncertainty caused by the Vanishing Twin Syndrome. To fill the great emptiness in her life and believing the world to be full of lies, Bio has found, or so she believes, her path to salvation - a journey to the idyllic planet of Tri-Flora. On this planet exists a great civilization based on Biomimetics and where there are no lies. This vision has come to her via a compendium: Gloria McFillan’s “The Art of Lies and Obfuscation: Theory and Practice”.
Bio presents herself as the passenger assistant on an intergalactic voyage run by SpaceNirvana to the Tri-Florian system some light-years away. She is leading us to a distant world of singing, dancing and free love, all under Gloria’s guidance.
During the voyage, Bio is distracted by VideoChat interventions from family members who, one by one, cast some doubt on her sense of reality if not her sanity.
Her mother, Iris, is worried for Bio but then manipulates and castigates her. A daughter, Bliss, appeals for help from within a locked room but is disowned by Bio who claims she has never been pregnant. Then her twin sister, Ono, insists they are both still within the womb, waiting to be born.
Finally, Bio is faced with her own digital replica – a cipher for the survivor from the probable extinction of carbon-based life forms in a world where lying is an art form.
This is absurdist science-fiction in which Bio’s family members appear as projections on stage and which, through the conceit of conversation, lead Bio to her potential for self-realization.
Talia Rita Graziano performs live and on-screen in multiple roles. For an actor and singer, it's a tour de force as she navigates the complexities of a personality in crisis against the backdrop of a new music score and some 'video delusions'.
Created by Edward Primrose, the work is to be presented by the performance troupe SphereSonores as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.
There will be an additional Public Lecture on the production in relation to the Vanishing Twin Syndrome from psychoanalytic and dramaturgical perspectives. Sunday 22nd September at 2pm in the same venue.
