We are Imaginary Theatre, a company that has been creating inspiring arts experiences with children, their families, and communities for over 10 years. In the space where childhood, creativity & community meet, Imaginary provides vital opportunities for children to play and flourish.
We are seeking your support to realise our next project, ‘Circle’, a series of interactive new-media artworks where children will play in worlds of sound, light and colour.

This idea is the brain-child of Luke Lickfold, an artist who works with interactive technology. A few years ago, Luke shared with Imaginary Theatre's Artistic Director Thom Browning, an idea that he had whilst living and working in Japan.
His idea was Circle - a ‘smart ball’ that can be manipulated within an interactive environment, to create a world of immersive sound and colour. Fusing technology, design and movement, Luke's idea for Circle was to give children a chance to play actively in a 21st century wonderland.
We thought the idea was really interesting, and it got us thinking about how children play with technology.
The majority of technology for children is currently screen-based, offering mostly passive interactions that don’t facilitate the active play that’s crucial to children’s physical, neurological and social development. One of the things we loved about Circle is that it seeks to solve this problem, creating technological platforms for children that nurture their in-built capacity for physically active, kinaesthetic, and creative play.

Right now, we are creating the two innovative technologies that will make Circle work; ‘The Entity’, a smart ball, manipulated by a user within ‘The Habitat’, an immersive sound and lighting environment. The Habitat and The Entity work together to respond to user behaviours through unique interactions.
Future applications of this technology are diverse; from immersive installations where children move through sound and colour, to performances where dancers engage in virtuosic play, to a standalone Circle - a 21st century toy for use in the home or school.

The potential for this project is extraordinary, but we need some help to develop the initial technology and realise our dreams. Luckily, we have already been offered some help from Creative Partnerships Australia through their Plus1 funding program, committing to match every dollar you donate (up to a maximum of $8k). How good is that!?

How The Funds Will Be Used
Our Plus1 funding allows us to turn $6000 of your generous donations into a $12000 project budget.
We will be allocating the entirety of this to our Phase 2 Research and Development process, taking place from June - October 2016.
The $6k in Pozible funding will be invested in:
- Purchase of electronic hardware required to create the interactive components of ‘Circle’.
- The design and fabrication of Phase 2 prototypes of ‘The Entity’.
- The purchase of cool LED lighting equipment to upgrade the illumination potential of ‘The Habitat’.
The $6k in Plus1 funding, matched dollar for dollar from your donations, will be invested in:
- A contribution towards Artists fees for the project team.
- Bringing a photographer and videographer in to document our testing process, key to gaining future investment in the project.
- A little pool of funds to cover overheads an admin associated with running a project such as this.
