We’re John and Katrina Kelly and Sally Bruen, 28 years ago we set out to establish a business producing food from the animals which belong here, which are adapted to our land and to which it is adapted.   Katrina and John are both from old farming stock, but we wanted to explore a more sustainable way of producing food in this land.   We set up a business to produce meat from super-abundant Tasmanian wallaby.  It’s been rather successful and Australian’s have shown wide support for the idea that it  makes greater environmental wisdom producing food from the animals which belong in this land, more of our story is here, our story.  Our wallaby meat is in retail outlets throughout Tas and Vic and has been championed by many of the country’s top chefs.  Now we want to branch out into fashion.

All Wuggs are made from Tasmanian wallaby fur as a by-product of our sustainable wallaby meat harvest.

Wuggs have a sustainable soul 

All of our wallaby is wild sourced in Tasmania from their natural environment under strict Government control and regulation. The Tasmanian government has been monitoring the wallaby population for 50 years and have well developed systems to ensure the population remains extremely abundant. There’s over 3 million wallabies in Tasmania and their population is increasing. We harvest less than 2% of the population per year, by doing so we help farmers reduce the impact of large numbers of wallaby on their enterprises.

Reducing Emissions

Methane is produced in large quantities in the stomachs of farmed animals such as cattle and sheep. Methane gas emissions from livestock account for over 10% of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. Wallaby have different digestive systems and emit almost no methane.

Use less water 

Wallaby water consumption is 70% less than sheep and almost 90% less than beef. Tasmanian wallaby is the natural choice for the environmentally conscious consumer.

Zero Waste

We are committed to utilising the whole animal. We use all parts of the animals we harvest so there is minimal waste.  By turning the hides into Wuggs we can fully close the loop.

Before we can take the plunge to produce Wuggs full time, we need to have confidence there’s a market. We know Australian’s support the idea that producing food from the animals which belong here is environmentally wise, but we need to know that they feel the same way about clothing.  

To produce Wuggs economically we need to do a production run of at least 100 pairs, there’s a lot involved.  The skins have to be selected, shipped to the tannery in Melbourne, tanned into the finest grade leather, then cut into the exact correct shapes for Wuggs (there’s six different shaped pieces of leather in each boot), then stitched and fitted to the soles and finally our trademark hot iron brand applied.

So, before we launch into full time production, we need to pre-sell 100 pairs of Wuggs within 30 days.  This will help convince us that Australian’s support environmentally wise clothing production from the animals which belong in this land. And then we will go for it and start producing full time.

Boot manufacture will start once we reach the target,  It will take approx. 5 weeks to tan the skins and make the boots, so if we reach the target Wuggs delivery will be in early Nov 2021.
