VDB International Recording Project
SECOND UPDATE!!
A huge thanks to all of you who have supported our project! We are so excited to have hit our original target and now we have enough to buy some new music stands too. This means that the recording is able to go ahead, but we have decided to stretch our target further for the next 48 hours because every dollar we raise now lessens our risk for the concert series that we are running simultaneously. We want you to know that every cent we are raising above our target will be put to good use and will help to strengthen our organisation. This is your last chance to pre-order our Handel CD as well, so go for it!
UPDATE!!!!
We have reached our target! Thanks so much to everybody for your support! As we have got there early, we have decided to stretch our target so that we may buy some professional music stands - much needed kit for us! So if you hadn't got around to pledging to this campaigh, it is not too late!
THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO HAS DONATED SO FAR!
Can you help VAN DIEMEN'S BAND bring an international recording project to life?
WHAT IS THE PROJECT?
Van Diemen’s Band, Tasmania's baroque super-group has been offered an exciting opportunity to record Handel’s Opus 3 Concerti Grossi for the Swedish label BIS as a European first release for this label.
There is a gap in the market for this piece, as it has been many years since this major Handel work has been recorded, and it is recorded nowhere near as frequently as his later work, the Opus 6 Concerti Grossi.
To bring this unique project to fruition, Van Diemen’s Band needs additional financial support and we are asking you to consider donating.
BIS could have chosen to work with a European ensemble on this project, but they have specifically requested to work with us on the strength of our first album for ABC Classics (Cello Napoletano), and this is a real coup for an Australian group.
The project will be directed by esteemed French conductor Martin Gester from the Parlement de Musique in Strasbourg who has previously recorded the Handel Opus 6 concerti grossi for BIS with a European ensemble.
DOUBLE YOUR MONEY!
This project has been awarded in-principle matched funding through Creative Partnerships PLUS 1 program. That means that every dollar we raise here will be matched dollar for dollar by them! So your donation will be effectively doubled!
IF IT IS SUCH A GOOD DEAL WHY IS VDB ASKING YOU TO DONATE?
The classical recording industry is not what it was even 20 years ago, and most classical recording companies are not in a position any more to stump up the funds for studio work without contributions from the artists themselves. That's why many of the major ensembles have their own labels or choose to do their recordings during live performances.
This project will culminate in a series of studio sessions which will be recorded in Tasmania with guest musicians from overseas, as well as interstate specialist musicians. Funds raised through this Pozible campaign will help cover the costs involved.
HOW CAN YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS PROJECT MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE?
These days recordings are not money-making ventures, they are business cards. We are feeling really proud to have been chosen for this wonderful project, and we take the long view of using something like this to cement classical music making in the field of baroque music not just in Australia but around the world.
WHEN WILL YOU HEAR THE RESULTS?
The recording is happening in October/November of this year, and although we haven’t been given a release date yet by Bis, we anticipate a European release in Summer 2020, with Australasian release shortly after that.
HOW DO YOU DONATE?
Choose from one of the many rewards we have on offer including pre-ordered copies of the CD. We will be accepting pledges of any amount and every dollar you give us will be DOUBLED by Creative Partnerships Australia once our target is reached! We can also accept tax deductible donations if you choose not to receive a reward for your pledge. We thank you for your support!
ABOUT VAN DIEMEN'S BAND
Based in the wild and unspoiled island state of Tasmania at the southernmost tip of Australia, Van Diemen’s Band gave its debut performances in March 2017 as part of the Ten Days on the Island Festival, presenting a program of Neapolitan music by Fiorenza, Geminiani and the Scarlatti family.
VDB is made up of some of the nation’s most highly respected early music specialists who, between them, have many decades of experience with some of the finest ensembles in Europe and Australia. With a passion for excellence together with integrity of musicological research, VDB strives to share this expertise by presenting its discoveries in exciting and accessible concerts in interesting and unconventional venues.
A flexible ensemble, VDB can vary in size from an intimate chamber group to a larger mid-eighteenth-century orchestra. Working with regular guest directors, VDB explores the creativity and freedom of expression in music of the baroque while deferring to historical sources on style and instrumentation.
Seeing the vital importance of education, VDB has a mission to train the next generation of Tasmanian and national musicians through workshops and an ‘academy’-style teaching program that culminates in professional playing opportunities.
Van Diemen’s Band’s debut CD ‘Cello Napoletano’ for ABC Classics was released in Australia in October 2017, and in the UK/Europe in 2018.
Van Diemen’s Band embarked on its first national tour in October 2018, preforming in the Melbourne International Festival, UKARIA and Port Fairy Spring Music Festival. Further national touring has taken Van Diemen's Band to Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra.
VDB will be touring regional Tasmania in June 2019 travelling to Franklin, St Helens, Scottsdale, Latrobe and Stanley.
