Hi friends and supporters
We are Senyawa—an experimental music duo made up of Rully Shabara (extended vocal technique) and Wukir Suryadi (homemade instrument). The music that we create is a combination of extended vocal technique and a homemade instrument. The instrument was handcrafted by master instrument builder Wukir out of one long piece of bamboo, it is a string instrument with guitar pick-ups—it is amplified and processed through several effects pedals but at times is played as an acoustic instrument, percussion instrument or bowed like a cello.
We are located in the ancient city of Jogjakarta, Central Java, Indonesia and our music is a reflection of our traditional Javanese heritage filtered through a framework of contemporary experimental music practices. We try to push the boundaries of both traditions in an attempt to mix the musics’ of the east and the west to create a new sound.
As a duo we have been performing and playing together extensively for the last 3 years and we have toured Indonesia several times over. However last year we performed internationally for the first time at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival sharing the stage with many great musicians such as Faust, Yoshida Tatsuya and Charlemagne Palestine.
Since then we were invited to play at MONA FOMA in Tasmania and in March this year we will play at the Adelaide Festival. Wukir as a solo performer recently finished a residency at STEIM in Amsterdam.
At the end of last year were also involved with supporting and playing with the awesome Arrington de Dionyso's 'Malaikat Dan Singa'—touring with him extensively throughout Indonesia. We were also lucky enough at the same time to collaborate with filmmaker Vincent Moon—watch the first edit here!
And most recently we spent a great day recording with master improviser and daxphone player Uchihashi Kazuhisa, the results of which can be heard as 2 bonus tracks on the vinyl if we can get the support!

Although we have had the opportunity to play at these fantastic festivals and with many amazing musicians, we still need your support!
We are planning to record our second album and we need funds to do it.
We would also like to press the second album to vinyl limited to 200 copies along with limited edition screen printed t-shirts plus uniquely handcrafted CDs (only 50) individually made by Senyawa.
We will also have available, in limited numbers, a digital download version of the second album with a high quality PDF of the artwork.
If you help us achieve our goal you will end up with something very special—the vinyl, CDs and t-shirts are limited edition runs only! Never again to be repeated...
