Malaysian artists always be treated as second class citizen. They seldom did not get sufficient pay for their creative work. Malaysian audience on the other hand do not have the purchasing power to spend a little bit more to watch artists to perform live.
As a producer of a theater company in Malaysia, I find this work a challenge. Every time I plan to present and share some of my artists friends' work, I need to have in my bank account a sum of savings to cover our cost; namely the artists' transportation, meal for the day, our research, our rent and bills bills bills.
We have proved to the audience and the major public of Malaysians comic stunts that stand-up comedy in Malay has a crowd. The first season will be end on July 10, 2014. Throughout the show, we manage to capture at least 30 audience in a hall that can fill 80 seats. I feel this is a very good start.
I know that to start something new like malay stand-up comedy in a country like Malaysia is a risk. But we are committed to this project. Hence, we have planned our second season beginnig from August right until the end of the year!
This new season, we are open a wider platform to an open-mic session whereby we allow whoever would like to try their talent would be able to perform LIVE with the other outstanding line-ups that we already have. This would bring the audience more enjoyable time watching more comics in every show.
Our next season has been set as follows:
February 2015: 26th
March 2015: 3rd & 19th
April 2015: 2nd, 16th, 30th
May 2015: 1st, 7th &21st
How The Funds Will Be Used
With your pledges, I have planned and will use for the welfare of the artists. First and foremost, the fund will give our performers their transportation allowance.
We have request from our comic friends from the neighboring countries; Singapore and Indonesia who love to perform here in Malaysia. With this fund, we will use this to cover their flight tickets and accommodation while performing with us. Their appearance (being a foreigner) need to get approval from our local authority (JK-PUSPAL). The paperwork is hell. For this reason, an administrator is highly needed so that we fulfill all requirements set by the authorities.
We also plan to collaborate with THE CRACKHOUSE, a comedy club which was established recently.
The Challenges
Malay race in Malaysia are not open to this type of shows (yet). Hence, we receive some feedbacks from the social media commenting that we are like doing a political campaign. Look how shallow our mindset is?
We have the vision to educate our audience especially malays to be open and accept stand-up comics rather that reality shows that has been fed to us in television for years.
Our audience also not an active participants in every shows that we have performed. With more exposures, we want more active audience in interacting with performers and make them appreciative.
