On 20th February 2018, I was found guilty by the Ipoh Sessions Court and fined RM30,000 along with a 1-month jail sentence for the crime of creating a satirical clown poster criticising the Malaysian Prime Minister for his involvement in the 1MDB corruption scandal involving billions of dollars. Works of satire and parody should be legitimate and protected forms of political dissent, not criminalised. This guilty verdict is an affront to all artists and persons exercising our democratic rights and freedom of expression enshrined under Article 10 of our Federal Constitution. 

People holding positions of power in this country should be ready to accept criticisms, no matter how unpopular or dissenting. If they cannot respect these democratic values, then it is our duty to continuously remind them we will not be cowed by such authoritarian tactics. 

They have slapped me with a heavy sentence to teach me a lesson, but this politically motivated prosecution has failed to deter me from designing even more clown posters, stickers, book covers, pins and t-shirts. The only lesson I have learnt is the power of protest art in mobilising resistance against corruption and repression.

All proceeds will go into a dedicated Penghasut bank account to cover court expenses and fines. Should the Ipoh guilty verdict be overturned, the funds will be reserved for the ongoing Kuala Lumpur case. Should I be acquitted on both charges, remaining funds will be used to support other persons charged under the same law for political satire or dissent and do not have financial access to pay for bail or fine. Financial records will be made public.
