FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY:art festival

A$2,240
of $2,000 targetyrs ago
Successful on 29th Jun 2014 at 2:34AM.
We are putting on a mini arts festival in Alice Springs, The Northern Territory, called FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY. Let me explain:

It's hot in the desert of Central Australia and the only thing breeding faster up here than flies and germs, is talent.

We moved to Alice Springs three years ago and it has never ceased to amaze us how this tiny little town manages to maintain such a dangerous ratio of gifted artists, musicians and creative folk. People in The Centre might not show up on time, or with shoes, but when they eventually arrive, they do so with a DIY, get-involved, whole hearted approach that is truly unique and deserves to be celebrated.

FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY will be that celebrating champion.

The three week festival is being hosted and developed by us - Josh Davis %20 Alex Hullah (we are the creative team Elephant Island - and the Alice Springs ARI (Artist Run Initiative), Watch This Space. Together this super group looks to re-activate Watch This Space into an open studio collaboration between local and interstate artists all working together to produce and exhibit new work and get the community involved. A key area of focus for this collaboration will be the creation of a Sculpture Stage inside the gallery, which will happen within the first two weeks of the festival. The Sculpture Stage will be an experimental product of art-making and interactions and the final creation will then be used to host seven days of curated events, performances, and temporary exhibitions.

At this stage we have 8 feature artists (see below) all of whom carry the flame for Alice Springs in their own unique way. These legends are contributing their ambitious projects, helping to raise funds, and will help to coordinate the festival. There are many others local acts that have proposed projects and are set to be involved. With your help we will be able to bring in more acts, artists and run a festival like no other in Australia.

THE STORY ABOUT HOW WE CAME TO THE DESERT AND THE START OF FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY
The first time we ever came to town we got spirited away in a collaboration creating a giant mobile Caterpillar sculpture with internal organs made from percussion instruments. Only in Alice Springs could a car breakdown turn into helping push a giant caterpillar down the main street, manning the helm of the lead float in the opening of the Alice Springs Desert Festival* . At that stage It was our first time in town, only passing through and - as we helped pushed the float with thirty school kids all banging the caterpillar's internal organ drums, with madmen chanting and the crowd cheering - we felt like we had landed in a strange sort of paradise. The Todd River, usually a dry river bed, had flowed and we knew we would be back.

FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY not only wants to celebrate art in Alice Springs, but it also wants to return the favour to the amazing creatives in this town that have made us so welcome and inspire us everyday.

Once our campaign is successful (fingers crossed) we will be seeking to involve more collaborators for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY so if getting involved with an art project in the desert sounds good to you, we would love to hear from you.

Let's Party.

(*Speaking of the Desert Festival, FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY will be happening at the same time as the Alice Springs Desert Festival. This means that it will be the perfect time to visit the desert and take in it's unparalleled creativity. So whether it's your first time to the desert, or you are a local at heart living abroad, possibly missing the smell of broken glass in the morning, September is the perfect time to visit and get involved with this project.)

We will be updating the FBCG website with more information.

Our exciting funding situation

Initially this project was going to be put on completely through volunteer hours and begged/ borrowed/ stolen materials. However,
we have had some exciting news:

Thanks to Creative Partnerships Australia, every dollar you give will be matched up to $2,000 through their Match: Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative.

This means that every dollar you donate is sort of like two dollars! Hooray!

In addition to this matched funds campaign, there are also eight other individual artists from around Australia aiming to raise $1,000 each for their involvement in FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY.

These fellow-Pozible artists are the key collaborating artists who had initially volunteered their time free of charge and it looks like , if we can get our Pozible campaigns off the ground, they wont all be condemned to mee-goreng sandwiches for the month of September.

As thrilled as we are about the matched funds program, the funding does come with a catch - which is - if any of the nine Pozible campaigns for FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY fail, then none of the raised funds will be matched. Which means that if one of the campaigns misses it's target by $1 none of the funds will be matched......it's scary.....

HUMPY by Beth Sometimes - A photographic series and interactive installation

What am I humping for?
New skin for the old ceremony?

Beth will be creating an opportunity for u to renew your vows with the cosmos in a private love shack with giant foam playmates. Enter the spiritual void! Connect to the source. U might ask yourself, “What am I humping for?” New skin for the old ceremony? A photographic series and interactive installation: HUMPY.

Beth is experienced visual artist of extraordinary gravity and has created works across many different mediums from beautifully hand-crafted drawings to het extraordinary brand of imaginative and perhaps psychically cathartic performances, much of this work draws on her experiences living and working in Central Australia. She is known for her evocative performances such as desert supergroup The OK Sluts and is the published author of From Sometimes, Love Beth - a documentative catalogue of a series of postcards she made and mailed every day for a year while living in the heart of our country.

How The Funds Will Be Used

.The opportunity to raise these funds does not mean that we will be installing an infinity pool in the back of Watch This Space anytime soon, but it does mean that hopefully we will be able to cover some of the costs associated with running a fun, safe, engaging festival. We hope that it means that we can engage a wider audience and artists, and if you have a great idea we hope that the funding means we can get you onboard.

Here is a more detailed breakdown of what we will be spending the funds on:

Flying in artists from around Australia.
Covering the material costs of the sculpture stage
Printing posters and other marketing material.
Producing a short documentary about the project profiling the artists involved and the collaboration that takes place.
Hiring a photographer to take pictures.
Hiring technical gear - PAs, audio/visual equipment
Supplying food and drinks for some of the events
Gas/water/electricity/chocolate.

The Challenges

Ten artists in a room together for three weeks with an open door and a sign on the door saying FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY?

What could possibly go wrong?

Don't answer that!.....

To be honest we think that the largest challenge will be in co-ordinating the energies of such a large group of artists, all with their own ideas, tastes, favourite music genres and soda water addictions. However we feel that the selected core artists all have the ability to, not only make art, but navigate the complexities of such a large group-dynamic, while at the same time bringing the best out of each other and those around them. The core of this event is made up of wonderful people that have experience putting on shows, exhibiting new work, facilitating large groups, working as emergency room doctors, giving birth in living rooms, shoplifting and getting up on stages in front of thousands of people. We have complete confidence that whatever chaos is soon about to ensue that this team will keep their hands firmly on the reins.

We just hope that you can be there too to cheer them on and join in the show.

FREE BBQ CASH GIVEAWAY forever.
