What is Unbiasly?

Unbiasly.com(http://www.unbiasly.com) is a social news platform. The platform was created to bridge the gap between the news delivered by journalist and news delivered by the common person via social media, thus allowing the reader an opportunity to interact with the stories that interest them. The key feature of Unbiasly is the ability to search for a story of interest and seamlessly move between articles, tweets, facebook statuses and Instagram images related to the story. The best of all browsing worlds is finally together on one platform.

The Origins Of Unbiasly

Unbiasly was conceived of during the last presidential election. Journalists supporting both the Democratic and Republican campaigns were writing articles that were far from neutral and were obviously biased in support their agendas. I believed this was irresponsible journalism and wanted to create a tool that people could use to better inform themselves, promote good journalism, and reprimand reckless propaganda. Unbiasly is a” power to the people” movement.
Unbiasly was originally meant to be a rating system where the reader could judge and influence journalism. However, it has recently become apparent that social media in certain situations can deliver news faster than journalism. Instead of pitting social media and journalism against each other, Unbiasly now seeks to have the two news sources complement each other.

Impact

When creating this platform, I wanted to impact both the reader and the media. I want the average person to be more educated and better informed about events that are unfolding. If people are able to read a story from multiple sources and perspectives, they are more likely to have a greater understanding of events, and draw sounder conclusions. Unbiasly is also a great discovery platform for topics ranging from the latest new apps, advances in science, up to date celebrity info to what politicians are doing for you.
For media sources, I want this platform help breathe life into journalism and help underrepresented sources that write good articles to have a way of getting noticed. Such media sources can gain new readers and work with social media to embellish their content.

How Much and What Is It For?
Unbiasly.com is a free platform that has become moderately successful. Nevertheless, the problem with success is increased operating costs based upon an increase in the number of people using the service. As shown below, visits to Unbiasly.com are beginning to grow rapidly:
April 2013 - 1,770 visits
May 2013 - 7,455 visits
June 2013 - 10,986 visits
July 2013 - 9,041 visits as of 7/19/2013

Site hosting during June 2013 cost $303 and is expected to exceed $350 for the month of July 2013. Therefore we are seeking funding to help maintain and expand the current infrastructure to handle up to 1 million + visits per month over the next year. This means adding more hardware so that you can have a faster and more reliable service. The following is a breakdown of the upgrades we are planning:
- 1 Load Balancer
- 3 Web servers
- 2 Database servers on SSD (master/slave)
- 1 Worker Server
- 1 Cache Server

If that sounds like a foreign language to you, it basically means you will always have a service that is fast and is always up and running. We estimate this upgrade to cost approximately $9,600 a year, or $800 a month. By comparison, YouTube’s bandwidth cost is $1 million+ a day.

Money raised will also go towards future updates to Unbiasly will include some cool features such as the capability to search and browse local news, a mobile app, building an advertisement network (to eventually become self sufficient), creating a system for blogs to get users more involved and some cool browser extensions. But right now, we need to be able to efficiently handle the current traffic and to accommodate rapid growth.
