The Magic of Now is a picture book about believing in your unique self - the part of you that may be different to everyone else but makes perfect sense in the big picture.
It's about some creatures with wings and others with hairdos. In comes our hairoine, born different - she has wings and hair. She uses her difference to save the day.
This is a story of collaboration based on shared values, right now. The words have been a loving collaboration amongst friends of all ages (aged 7 - 85). The pictures have been hand drawn and painted.
It's now ready for production! It's perfect that this creation is realised through the next collaboration, crowdfunding.
Though the story is for ages 4-8 years old, boys and girls, children as young as two years old love it for its bright, detailed pictures. They adore this scene, depicting our hairoine meeting her creative tribe, a print of which is being offered as a reward....
7-8 year old children (and older) appreciate its deeper meaning and the combination of the inner and outer world. Boys especially love the rescue scenes. Here's 'The Plait Rescue'.

The Challenges
The main challenge is to make enough profit, given falling book prices and increasingly bigger players.
How do I stand out amongst thousands of children's books flooding the online market each month?
1. Focus on uniqueness. Apart from creative and supportive grownups and teachers, I market to experts in children's creativity and those with special needs; those embedding the 'Positive Education' curriculum, building self-esteem and skilling kids in dealing with the increasing issue of bullying as our world diversifies. Differences indicate originality.
2. Maximise product profit through going with POD print and distribution for self-publishers - for the longer term business model. (For this initial crowdfunding print run, I am using a short print run to keep control of everything and offer personal service such as bundling rewards).
The best business model for me is Lightning Source:
a. It is at the heart of the emerging 'Print on Demand' (POD) industry. POD means a book is always in print, printed one at a time and closest to the customer.
b. Lightning Source has the best and most widespread colour POD print technology.
c. It's parent company is Ingram Content - the largest book wholesaler in the USA, at the centre of the industry. Go with Lightning and you automatically go into Ingram's database, which links to all major players including Amazon and Barnes and Noble (75% of the online market).
3. Guide business decisions through three core values: creativity, integrity and joy; and its purpose to support us all to believe in our true nature.
4. Act as my heroine does: ask for support. I live her collaborative story and Pozible makes this 'group hairdo' stylish and possible.
