SOME BACKSTORY

Lach and I (Erin) parked our car on the dirt road and started unpacking our instruments from our ‘Small Town’ tour. 

We had been on the road for three months. We drove up the east coast of Australia to Brisbane, flew to far-north Queensland, ran pop-up choirs throughout outback New South Wales and headed home through the South Australian wine regions. 

Now we had arrived back in Picola, my hometown. We had a swag of songs inspired by small towns and tunes inspired by the Australian landscape. 

In front of us, surrounded by yellow paddocks stood a hundred year old weatherboard farmhouse that had been empty for years. A broken verandah, outside dunny and tangled spider webs in every corner… 

This was going to be the perfect place to record our second all-Aussie album, ‘Yeah Nah’. 

On our first album ‘Small Town Anthropologies’ we worked with traditional American and English folk songs. But two years on, this started to feel a bit like playing dress-ups. We couldn’t rid ourselves of this calling to create music in our own accent and to explore the Australian traditional folk songs. 

Problem was, Australian folk music has a reputation for being nothing but nationalistic, blokey shearing songs; sweating with beer and bravado. Our music has always been intricate banjo and fiddle arrangements and singing the perspectives of women and outsiders. At first, we couldn’t see how this could fit. 

Ironically, it was a shearing song that helped us find our Australian folk voice. 

We wrote The Gathering Wool’ during the 2022 Floods after my Mum called me in distress, “your father has to shear a thousand sheep before the rains come. He can’t get any shearers and he is sixty you know!” 

I never thought I’d write a shearing song, but sometimes songs just fall into your lap and demand to be written. 

We released 'The Gathering Wool' as a single in June 2023, with a video shot on the farm starring my Dad and his two kelpies. 

You can hear the amazing accordion and backing vocals of Emily-Rose Sarkova (Chaika, Emily Rose and the Wild Things) and double bass of Nick Hendersen (The Good Behaviours). It’s been the biggest treat to collaborate with such amazing musical minds on a bunch of our tracks. 

THE PROCESS

For eight months we’ve painstakingly tracked each instrument in our home studio: violin, vocals, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bodhran, even gum leaves.  

We’ve asked Mischa Hernan to mix the album for us. He mixed our first album ‘Small Town Anthropologies’ and creates the best balanced sound of our beautiful acoustic instruments. 

Along with album artwork from Hannigan Heycox and a distinctive ‘Yeah Nah’ design from Kaitlyn Hickey, this album is going to be a special one, confident in its own originality and Australian folk sound.
