Still want to help out? (Firstly, that's awesome!) and it's not too late! Our campaign ends at midday on Friday 14th November so there is still time to donate funds. Filmmaking is hard work right? Especially if you are trying to produce good quality short films when starting out in the industry!
The reason for making this short film is two-fold. Firstly to provide an opportunity for a group of talented, budding filmmakers to collaborate, build their body of work and gain experience and secondly, to open up the discussion about mental health especially in relation to those engaged in creative practices.
First written in 2012 (when going through a particularly difficult period), this film explores the question 'do creative people feel emotion stronger and deeper than others?'
An artist Jacob, grapples with reality after an encounter one morning with a mysterious woman on a bridge. This meeting and her death afterwards stirs his dormant creativity and sets off a series of events which not only ripples through his own relationship with girlfriend Mia, but causes cracks to form in the close bonds of others within his world.
The result touches on the theme of creativity and madness, aiming to blur the lines and provide a more complex perspective of the assumption that genius = insanity or vice versa. Instead of focusing strictly on the 'creative genius', the film centres around the dynamics of the characters and the strain that mental illness can have on relationships.
That said, it's not all doom and gloom! This production is also an important stepping stone for the cast and crew in making more films, gaining experience and collaborating with other awesome, talented filmmakers! In the words of Lean Filmmaking: Getting Sh!t Done!
If you are as passionate as us about film, and this project strikes a chord with you then please pledge (every little helps!), or at least share this on Facebook and Twitter so we can spread the word and reach our target!
Thank-you from the bottom of our hearts!

How The Funds Will Be Used
With a running time of approximately 20 minutes, a lot of shooting is required which comes with a hefty price tag, and the target of $4016 just covers the basics. However, if you would like to help us make the final product of a higher standard your generously pledged funds will go towards helping us pay for better equipment, better sets and props, professional marketing collateral, free up the funds originally allocated to Pozible fees to be used instead for direct filming costs, ensure there are some funds for unexpected costs (so no-one has to pull out their credit card) are to help pay for equipment that the team are donating out of their own pocket (make-up, supplies, etc.).
THE BASIC COSTS:
- Hire of rehearsal spaces
- Equipment hire
- Set pieces, props, costumes
- Location permits and fees as well as other documentation and administration costs
- Catering and on-set costs (like reef shoes to wear when filming in the water and First Aid kits... not very exciting by necessary)
- Pozible fee, postage and other costs for delivery of rewards
- Travel and accommodation (so we can shoot REALLY early in the morning in Regional Victoria)
- Film Festival entry fees
- Marketing and printing costs for promotion
We are OVER THE MOON that we have the money we need to get started and every extra cent will go towards improving the quality of the production so if you would like to donate you have until midday on Friday 14th November!
The Challenges
Our lovely actor Annie is leaving to back to Canada FOREVER on 10th December so we have to start shooting her scenes before she leaves! Ahh! This presents major scheduling challenges which we are currently working through.
One of the most important aspects to this film is the process, and finding like-minded emerging filmmakers and actors that want to learn, grow and contribute to the collaborative and fun environment we create with our films. Having said that, the end result is just as important and we want to produce 'Rue' to the highest possible standard and find an appropriate platform/audience. This is to give the cast and crew adequate exposure, so finding the right balance between the learning process and professionalism on set will be challenge, as will finding the right platform and audience for the film.
