What We Tell Them
About the book
Ever since ex-Prime Minister Tony Abbott lost his seat at the last federal election, people have been asking, "When's Tony going on Dancing With The Stars?", and "What will his first 'celebrity children's book' be like?"
Your second question is answered!
What We Tell Them: A Storybook By Mr. Tony Abbott illuminates the words and actions of Australia's most accidental PM and some of his lovable pals! It isn't really a children's book, unless you like your children sad.
Inspired by Peter Singer and The Life You Can Save, the author plans to donate all profits from sales to effective charities.
That's why the book exists, in fact. David would not have chosen to delve this deeply into the mind of Tony Abbott without a very good reason.
In this video, Tony explains what he thinks the book is about:
About David
David Blumenstein is an award-winning artist and service designer who has drawn comics for Daily Review, Crikey, Junkee and Australian MAD Magazine.
His 2015 book #takedown: My evening on a pier with pick-up artists and protesters told how international pick-up artist instructor Julien Blanc fared when he met fierce protests in Melbourne.
He's a co-founder of Squishface Studio, an open comic artists' studio in Brunswick, Victoria.
Budget Overview
The book art is complete. David produced it in his own time.
The printer of the book has very generously donated their services and are printing this limited run of books at no charge. An initial run is already printed.
Pozible has also very generously cut its fee in half.
Other than a launch event at Readings Carlton on Wednesday 18 September, the book won't be available in stores.
As a result, virtually all proceeds from sales of the book will be able to be given directly to effective charities.
With 75 orders we'll reach our target on Pozible, but our hope is to sell every copy, raising upwards of $6000.
The other rewards are easy to deliver, largely requiring a bit of David's shoe leather (rubber, actually).
No Reward
I choose to have no reward for my pledge.
What We Tell Them: the book
In return for your donation, you will receive the book! 24 pages plus both front AND back covers, mailed directly to you. Give $13 and enjoy it yourself! Give $390 and force them on your child's whole class! Only the sky (and your wallet) is the limit.
What We Tell Them: the book, plus I'll draw you a Tony
In return for your donation, you will receive What We Tell Them, the book, mailed to you, WITH a hand-drawn Tony tucked inside it, suitable for framing, burning or folding in half and giving to a friend as a really perverse greeting card. Supply me something for Tony to say if you like.
Drawing for Story workshop
Drawing for Story is a workshop designed for people trying to communicate inside organisations. It introduces you to sketching storyboards as a way of explaining problems, aligning stakeholders and getting heads round challenges. Spend 3 hours learning to sketch out your ideas and explain them over a single sheet of paper. Later, use that sketched storyboard to explain stuff -- or turn it into a full-on slide deck or comms plan. Your choice. I typically charge about three times as much to run this workshop in an organisation, but for this donation I'll come to your workplace and run it with up to 12 people. I'll have to limit this to within 30kms from Melbourne CBD. If you're further away than that, get in touch and I can set up a specific reward/price just for you.
