THE STORY
In a fantasy town called Mallowville, all the inhabitants are made of marshmallow. The town is at the bottom of marshmallow mountain where, on top of the mountain lives a very fiery dragon....
THE TEAM
RAINSFORD TOWNER
Writing has always been at the heart of everything I have achieved as a theatre maker and filmmaker. But curiously, whilst I have been creating stories for children since I was a teenager, I had rarely given my children's writing the same standing as the work I have achieved for 'grown up' theatre and film.
That is until my daughter Ayisha started poking me, and poking me, and with unrelenting and beautiful determination brought me to a place where I could see that I have a sizable body of work for young people that is in many ways unique.
So yes...the book 'The Marshmallow People' is a new sprouting but an old tree. It's a beginning for me personally into this publishing world, but as accomplished producer's my partner Mary and I feel confident that this will be the start to creating a platform for publishing new children's work.
We founded Ranges Academy of Performings Arts (RAPA) Inc. A not-for-profit organisation set up to support the development of young people in our region in Filmmaking, Drama and Dance. As well, we produce the Lantern & Light International Children's Film Festival (LLICFF). Community is very important to us, we don't know where these initiatives will be post COVID, but we feel that establishing a new platform for children's publications will integrate and support them.
MARY SALEM
The marshmallow story came whispering to me whilst in my garden during lockdown in late March, when I stumbled upon a mallow flower. Have you ever wondered where marshmallow people come from?
I have been a witness to Rainsford’s storytelling ...his warmth and enchantment hold a visual imagination in a child’s world - often off beat, and I have always felt that one day they will find a place with other children and be a true legacy in memory of his son Anton. (Anton passed away after a five-year battle with leukemia)
And so working with Araceli’s watercolour skills to create imaginative images that translate Rainsford’s marshmallow characters has been exciting - and have stuck so well, just like the stickiness of velvety soft mallow.
AYISHA
When I was just a little girl, my Dad would tell me the story of the marshmallow people at night time before bed, and the story would never get old, the marshmallow people has definitely been part of my growing up and a story I will always love. I think The Marshmallow People is a great story for children; it was for me and I would love to have this book being read to other children everywhere and to have it bring them the joy and adventure that it brought to me. I mean, it’s about a marshmallow boy named Miles who conquers the big chocolate dragon. What kid wouldn’t love that? And I think it’s a great story to sit down and read with your child, I certainly enjoyed it with my Dad. Chocolate and marshmallow truly is the best.
ARACELI DEL CERRO
I am a watercolour artist; I teach watercolour illustration in Buenos Aires. Working on Rainsford's book has been one of my most fulfilling projects. It's rare to meet and work with creative people like Rainsford and Mary that support interpretative collaboration and have such passion for the arts. And look out world here comes Ayisha...!
I can't wait to see the book published, and I wish everyone in Australia the best, and everywhere, to be safe and creative.
CHILDREN'S MEDICAL RESEARCH
Most people will be surprised that children's medical research is often seriously under-funded. Part of our mission with this publishing initiative is to commit funds from children's publications to support cutting edge, integrated and holistic, children’s medical research.
Speaking of marshmallow, they originally made the confection eaten today from the sap of the roots of mallow grown in marshes, hence the name. Owners of small confection stores would whip the sap from the mallow root into a fluffy candy mould.
