Motherload Movie Screening Event

Successful on 15th May 2022 at 9:30AM.

To support the Babes on Bikes campaign we would like to host an event that gives women, mothers, parents and cyclists the opportunity to gather, get informed, and celebrate cycling with kids and other precious cargo.

The event is scheduled for Sunday 29 May 2022, 1 pm to 4 pm.

Babes on Bikes is a campaign to make cycling safe and accessible for women and children in Adelaide.

We don’t believe signs and paint on the road are enough to keep us safe, we need separated bike paths that provide an integrated and direct route to the places we need to go.

We need investment in family-friendly and female-friendly cycling infrastructure in the inner suburbs of Adelaide and beyond, for our children and the planet.

To help women and families connect through cycling, we would like to host a screening of the award-winning documentary Motherload

MOTHERLOAD captures a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of modern life, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote.

Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Motherhood was challenging, but to Liz hauling babies via car felt stifling. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.

Since its world premiere in May 2019, MOTHERLOAD has been on a Global Screening Tour featuring over 500 live and virtual venues.

Cargo Bike Display

As well as screening the film, we plan to have a display of cargo bikes thanks to Adelaide Cargo Bikes and Will Ride

This will give everyone the opportunity to see what others are doing and what options might suit them best. For those who get in quick to commit to displaying their bikes, there is a discounted ticket price on offer.

Venue

Our venue is the mother-led business Jackson Square in Manton Street, Hindmarsh. They are giving us a great deal, even as they recover from the ongoing impacts of the pandemic. Thanks Chelsea x

Next steps

When we reach our crowd-funding goal the next step will be to confirm the event and additional offerings such as live music and kids' activities which we plan to fund with any additional funds raised beyond our fixed costs through the "for the love of it" pledges.

Next, we will send you a booking link where you will have the option to add catering (additional cost). Please note you will also have the option to bring your own food.

There will be a bar where local SA beverages can be purchased on the day. No BYO.

Any profits will go toward the campaign for safe cycling and climate action in Adelaide through the work of Middle Ground Motherhood, Bike Adelaide and Australian Parents for Climate Action (SA).

Crowd-funding notes

Ticket combinations are cheaper if you get in early with your pledge. The combinations on offer aren't a perfect science, please do your best to find a combo that works for you.

Budget Overview

Fixed costs

(1) AV Projector and Operator $1,100

(2) Venue Hire $800

(3) Miscellaneous e.g. fees and charges etc $100

TOTAL = $2,000

We're keeping the budget as low as possible so that tickets are affordable.

Before you ask, yes we did approach various government departments and no they were not able to sponsor the event at this time. We don't have the time or resources to apply for grants, wait for a response and then do a report and acquittal on the outcome of the grant because we're mums + the rest.

Any additional pledges will go toward adding offerings like live music and kid's activities. You'll also be helping to contribute to covering the cost of event management (up to $500). Any profits after expenses go toward the BOB campaign partners MGM, Bike Adelaide and Australian Parents for Climate Action.

Thank you for your support x

Cargo Club

For those who have already made the switch to cargo bikes, please share the love by committing to display your precious cargo. In exchange, you will get access to a discounted ticket for one adult. Details: Cargo-Bike Show-&-Tell: Most cargo bike sightings are on-the-road (or bikeway) & fleeting! We’d like to offer those attending an opportunity to have a close-up look at all of the cargo bikes there on the day. We invite cargo-bike owners - mothers especially - to bring their bikes & park them inside the building (in a designated area) to provide a ’show & tell’ display & give others a chance to take a look. We’ll leave it up to owners to decide whether they want to answer questions or discuss their bikes with those interested. Although we’ll ensure that the venue’s freight entrance is supervised & secure, we’d ask that owners participating in the ’show & tell’ make sure their bikes are locked up while on display.
