Freo fans haven’t had much to cheer about this year but here is something the Purple Army can get behind. Matthew Pavlich is a Fremantle Football Club legend. More than that, the former captain of the club is a WA football legend. He’s a six-time All Australian, a six-time club champion; he led Freo goal kicking eight times and is one of only five players in AFL history to play over 300 games and kick 700 goals.

To put that last stat in perspective, the other four players in this exclusive club are: Gordon Coventry, Kevin Bartlett, Bernie Quinlan and Leigh Matthews - what else does a bloke have do to get a bronze sculpture?

Across more than 350 games, Pav has shown commitment, dedication and loyalty to his club and its supporters, and, with his storied career finally drawing to an end, it is time we recognised his immense contribution to footy in this State. What better way to recognise the Big Pav than a larger-than-life bronze sculpture by renowned WA artist Robert Hitchcock. For those who don't know, Hitchcock is the artist behind the iconic sculpture of John Gerovich at Fremantle Oval, the sculpture of champion racehorse Northerly at Ascot, and the one of Yagan on Heirisson Island. Hitchcock is also a Freo supporter and says he would consider it a “privilege” to recreate Pav’s imposing physique in bronze.

The City of Fremantle is considering placing the finished statue in the Freo Oval redevelopment but before that can happen we need to pay for the thing to be made. Hitchcock said if he starts now it’ll be ready before the start of next year’s AFL season. Let’s make it happen. If every Dockers member contributed a couple of dollars we'd get there easily.

FREEEEE-OH. FREEEEEE-OH. FREEEEE-OH.

How The Funds Will Be Used

100% of the money raised will go to the construction of a larger-than-life sculpture of the Big Pav in bronze by renowed WA artist Robert Hitchcock.

The Challenges

The only challenge here is whether or not Fremantle supporters have it in them after such a trying and, let's be honest, depressing season to dig deep for the greatest player their club has ever produced. We can't give Pav a Premiership but we can give him a giant bronze sculpture.

A Crisp High-Five

Every Freo fan that generously donates $10 will receive a crisp high-five from Inside Cover editor Ben O'Shea. To be redeemed at the sculpture's unveiling ceremony. Plus, you'll get a sense of satisfaction from knowing you have done your part to remember one of WA's greatest footballers.
