What is How We Roll about?

How We Roll follows the story of Logan, a starry-eyed young man, reflecting on his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Lily, as he competes against her new boyfriend in a bowling game to win back her attention. Like many of us, Logan places his self worth in whether he is in a relationship. However, for Logan to achieve happiness he must discover the love he has for the most important person in his life, himself. 

Message From The Director

How We Roll aims to challenge people’s self-perception. Being self-aware enough to realise what your worth is and put yourself first is really one of the hardest things to come to terms with. By following along with Logan on his journey I hope to inspire people to take the first steps towards self-love.

How We Roll is close to my heart. As someone who can strongly relate to what Logan is going through and having struggled with self love, I know I am the right person to tell this story. I am excited to bring the script to life visually by juxtaposing the fantasy Logan has made up in his head and the harsh reality of the truth that not only he faces but we all face.

Drawing inspiration from films such as 'Boy' (Taika Waititi) and 'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' (Edgar Wright), How We Roll takes place in reality as well as inside Logan's conscience. I wanted to approach the visuals as exaggerated and over the top, really heightening the drama that Logan thinks he is going through. When Logan is reflecting on his relationship the visuals are grounded in reality. Logan's dependancy on validation from Lily leads him to view his own relationship in a way that is disjointed from reality.

Olivia is a multi-talented creative from Brisbane. After working closely with Mitchell as the cinematographer on his directorial debut, Tiny Little Families, Olivia knew she wanted to help bring his next project to life. She values how filmmaking gives a voice to the human experience and gives people the opportunity to feel represented and moved. Olivia is inspired by visual imagery and is currently preparing for her role as cinematographer on the upcoming short film, Lovesick. Olivia has worked hard to bring this story to screen and feels rewarded to see the community engaging with the project.

🎥Jamie Zin

Jamie boasts an impressive portfolio of award-winning work, with his short film The Strawman taking home 7 awards at the JMC Martini’s. Jamie has a flair for visual storytelling and pushing the boundaries through innovative and stylised concepts. In between working on How We Roll, he wrapped as cinematographer on Love You Goodbye and is now in Pre-Production for his second short, Paperboy. What drew Jamie to this project was how he could relate to the message of toxicity within relationships and getting caught up in feeling needed for validation. His visual approach brings an energetic and quirky texture to the story.
