THE BOOK & PHOTOS

When I’ve returned from the Antarctic my nightly dreams are of big mountains, wide-open spaces, the curiosity of penguins, the wonder of whales, leopard seals speeding through the water, and magnificent albatross soaring across the sky before dipping low towards the ocean.

The Arctic provokes memories of inquisitive polar bears, seals slicing through the water, the tusks and bulk of walrus, and small birds accompanying us everywhere we go, on and off the water.  All of this is against the backdrop of mountains and glaciers.

And the ice – that extraordinary, beautiful and colourful state of water that supports all life in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Lilliehook Glacier, Svalbard

Having travelled to the Antarctic (three times, so far) and Arctic (five times, so far), I’ve learned that many of my friends knew that the Arctic was in the north and the Antarctic in the south. However they have often said, “Wow, you’re going to the Arctic – you’ll see so many penguins!” Or, “You’re going back to the Antarctic, be careful of the polar bears!”

Artwork by Danielle Hernandez, who also designed the book

My response to the second comment was: “Well, not really – penguins can be very feisty. Maybe they scared the polar bears away!”  Of course, I was joking. Still, there is a general lack of understanding of these two regions, despite their importance to our climate and the ecology of our planet.

This book builds on my photos and the stories from my travels. It provides information to get you interested, and maybe excited about the two “ends” of our planet. If you have the opportunity, perhaps you’ll go to one, or both, to visit and see the extraordinary beauty and, of course, to meet the animals. It might spark interest in the sciences, and you’ll find opportunities to work there, learning and studying more about these regions, the wildlife and the climate. Or perhaps just reading the book and seeing my photos will be sufficiently rewarding.

Whichever you choose, or have the opportunity to explore, I encourage you to follow through. Go for it!  Although I must include a warning: being in these regions can be addictive.

The book is designed for people from 12 to 112.  It describes both polar regions:  the Arctic where the North Pole is surrounded by sea ice and ocean, and the Antarctic continent, where the South Pole is surrounded by land.

The Arctic's megastar, the polar bear, is featured, as are the Antarctic's many, very cute penguins.

Information is provided on the best times to travel to each area, what it's like to travel by expedition ship, and the roles of the three different types of crew on these ships.  The ships' crews have deep, valuable experience and provide interesting information. Many are specialists in their fields:  marine biologists, cetacean (whale/dolphin) specialists, historians, geologists, ornithologists and of course, professional photographers.
