Cubbit is a new cloud: one that’s distributed, user-powered, and forever yours. Cubbit’s users join forces to create a collaborative storage space - forming the most private, secure, and sustainable cloud ever.

Inspired by bees and the structure of a beehive - we use a distributed architecture to power our network - the Swarm. Instead of giant server farms, we use individual servers in users' homes connected peer-to-peer. Powered by collaboration - Cubbit Cells talk to each other and work together to power the network.

Cubbit has a zero-knowledge cryptographic architecture, so that no one else, not even us, is able to access your data.

Be the next Aussie Bee to join the Swarm!

On top of the features you would normally expect from a cloud, like to store, backup, sync, and share files, Cubbit confers all the unique benefits of distribution:

  • it minimizes the risk of data loss;
  • it guarantees privacy;
  • it relieves energy consumption and in turn CO2 emissions.

Distribution matters and so does geographical proximity - users collaborate better when they are close

Creating an Australian branch of the Swarm would optimise resource allocation, improve data transfer performances, and drastically cut CO2 emissions. This is the power of collaboration.

There are already hundreds of Aussie Bees in the Swarm. Join them to create the cloud of the future!

More than 3.500 Cubbit Cells have been activated in more than 70 countries around the world.

Cubbit is the distributed cloud - the next evolution of data storage.

Like other Cloud storage services (Dropbox, iCloud etc), Cubbit lets you access and share your data remotely, it’s easy-to-use and has all the features you’d expect.

But unlike other Cloud services, Cubbit isn’t based on a centralized data center — it runs on a peer-to-peer network of Cubbit Cells with over 3500 active nodes in 70+ countries, which unlocks a unique set of features:

Cubbit combines the privacy of a NAS server with the ease of use of Dropbox and Google Drive - without monthly fees.

The Cubbit Cell is cloud storage that’s free, for life. We don’t believe that people should have to pay to access their own files. Choose your Cell - 512 GB or 1TB - and you’re set for life. A one-off fee and then you never need to give us another dime.

No one can see your files, not even Cubbit.

Thanks to our zero-knowledge technology, it’s impossible for anyone to see your files without your permission. Cubbit uses a military-grade protocol, splits your content into several encrypted chunks and safely distributes it over the peer-to-peer network – your files are 100% private.

The best bit? Your privacy is never compromised - it’s intrinsically impossible for your data to ever be shared with 3rd parties. Never worry about data breaches again.

Our Cells grow with you and your storage needs. Connect it to your router for up to 1TB of instant cloud storage.

Need more than that?

Plug in any external storage device via USB and your cloud space will increase by 50% of the attached storage – up to a total of 4TB.

Want to push even further?

You can connect more than one Cubbit Cell to the same account: the sky's the limit.

Create up to 4 independent Cloud accounts for each Cell.

Each account has its own storage and folders – you decide how much Cloud space each account gets and can keep everything easily under control from one place.

Never lose data again.

Cubbit is indestructible. How many times have you lost months—even years—of work and memories? Because your data is not inside your Cell – it’s everywhere, spread safely over the network of Cubbit Cells - it’s impossible to lose your files.

Whatever happens to your Cell or attached storage—a disconnection, a blackout, a fire, an earthquake, a flood or a space invasion—your data is always 100% safe and accessible from anywhere.

We’re closer to our users, making us faster than others. Our Cells are some of the fastest Cloud systems available. Unlike data centres, Cubbit can be close to its users via it’s unique distributed network.

Forget home servers or NAS, Cubbit is the new fast.

You upload, we’ll take care of syncing.

Experience the fastest upload speeds around. Upload files, near-instantaneously, to any Cell - we’ll take care of syncing the files to the Cloud.

Today, the internet runs on server farms—giant, polluting, centralized square miles of always-on computers, guarding (and milking) everyone’s data.

That’s why we designed Cubbit as a distributed network. By joining our forces we can fix the cloud, and by fixing the cloud we can fix the internet.

Our unique Cloud storage system works by connecting users’ space to form a vast peer to peer network. Just like bees in a Swarm, we believe the whole is much more than the sum of its parts.

Artificial Intelligence runs on top of the Cubbit distributed network. A suite of machine learning algorithms that, like an orchestra conductor, optimize the network making it increasingly faster and more efficient with time.  This combination—of distribution and an intelligent coordinator—offers you top performance at extremely low operating costs, the first cloud service that is free of monthly fees.

When you upload a file to your Cubbit Cell, it gets encrypted with one of the most advanced AES-256 encryption algorithms, split into dozens of chunks, and distributed in multiple copies across the network of Cubbit Cells via end-to-end zero-knowledge encrypted channels.

When you remote-access your file on Cubbit, the “AI coordinator” finds and downloads these chunks from corresponding Cells through peer-to-peer end-to-end encrypted channels, reassembles the file and decrypts it with the key that is retrievable to you and you alone.

The beauty is that the AI coordinator is cryptographically blind. The coordinator never gets to know the content of the file nor your encryption key. This is our zero-knowledge cryptographic architecture.

The files you save on Cubbit are not simply spread over the network in encrypted form. If that were the case, your data would be lost as soon as one of the Cubbit Cells storing your chunks goes offline!

Cubbit makes this impossible to happen by implementing a redundancy procedure based on Reed Solomon's error-correcting codes

Each encrypted file is split into 24 pieces and then processed into 36 redundancy shards. Out of the 36 shards, any 24 of those 36 redundant shards are necessary to retrieve the original encrypted file.

This is the marvel of the Cubbit’s redundancy protocol. In typical operating conditions, this procedure alone ensures a statistical persistence of ~ 99.9999% and the probability of data loss is smaller than one in a million.

The AI also monitors the uptime status of each Cell and triggers a recovery procedure when the total number of online shards reaches a threshold of 30/36, virtually achieving 100% persistency.

Bottom line: data saved on Cubbit cannot be lost.

The cloud of today is an environmental disaster.

The whole Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) ecosystem (i.e., the internet infrastructure) accounts for 10% of the world's energy consumption, about 1,500 Terawatt hours per year. That’s more energy than Germany and Japan combined!

Data centers account for one third of it, making “the Cloud”, despite the ephemeral name, an ecological monster that consumes as much as the entire United Kingdom (66 millions inhabitants and 5 th world’s economy).

Data centers contribute substantially to the internet’s carbon footprint, producing more than 110 million tons of CO2 every year.

Cubbit tackles this issue by addressing the two main root causes of this impact:

  • Storage consumption: keeping data remotely accessible on the cloud needs a constantly-operating and cooled-down infrastructure of storage racks.

  • Transfer consumption: similarly, transferring data over long distances heavily increases the data traffic on internet relay nodes, requiring additional energy to operate the routing infrastructure.

Cubbit is based on small, optimized single-board computers, which have an impact per GB that is 10 times smaller than data center racks. For each 10 TB saved on Cubbit, 1 ton of CO2 is saved every year. In the US alone, there are about 350 million TB of data held in data centers.

There is no data center to be cooled down

Actually, there is no data center at all. Cooling energy already accounts for 50% of the storage energy consumption in data centers.

Cubbit Cells run on low-consumption ARM processors.

These are extremely energy efficient. Because of their efficiency, ARM processors are, in fact, standard in mobile devices.

Data is optimally located near you.

Data centers cannot be close to every user, but Cubbit can be. By optimizing the location of the users’ data for geographical proximity, it reduces the energy consumption of data transfers while, at the same time, maximizing the transfer speed.

The result, detailed in our Green Paper, is that an average storage plan of ~5 TB will save, choosing Cubbit over traditional cloud storage, the equivalent consumption of an always-on fridge in a year.

Cubbit is the cloud powered by the users - it is possible only thanks to people who believe in a safer and greener cloud like you. Every single Cubbit Cell joined to the network increases its overall stability and performance while allowing for a better geo-optimization of the chunks, which in turn reduces carbon emissions.

We will invest the collected financing in the improvement of the software with the aim of ensuring users’ privacy while decreasing CO2 emissions.

During 2020,
- more than 4M files have been uploaded and protected on Cubbit

- more than 19.000 Kg of CO2 have been saved
This happened thanks to our current users base made of 3.500 active persons in more than 70 countries worldwide.

We made some steps ahead to improve how we store content, nut many more are to come.

We will donate 5% of the financing collected on Pozible to support the Australia Wildfire Relief Fund - Approximately 27AUD for each 1TB Cubbit Cell backed.

Budget Overview

For each 1TB Cubbit Cell backed, we will use:

  • 517AUD (95%) to ship you the Cubbit Cell and let you enjoy all the benefits of Cubbit. We will also invest a portion of the financing to develop new features - we have an ambitious Roadmap to follow;

  • 27AUD (5%) as a donation to the Australian Wildfire Fund to support the places hit by bushfires.

If we cross 15.000 AUD, for each backed Cubbit Cell we will clean 500sqm (5,382 square feet) of plastic from our oceans by supporting The Ocean Cleanup initiative.

Originally designed to be a distributed cloud network, Cubbit was founded in Italy in 2016 by Alessandro Cillario (COO), Marco Moshettini (CTO), Stefano Onofri (CEO), and Lorenzo Posani (Cofounder and advisor).

Cubbit counts Techstars and ClimateKIC amongst its global partners and has achieved international recognition through multiple awards granted by organizations such as Mastercard, TIM, and the European Commission.
