INSPIRATION

The pocket watch has become a thing of past. The last time I saw a person wearing one, I was in a cinema, and that person was in the film. Why isn’t there anyone wearing pocket watches anymore? They are beautiful instruments without a doubt, but aren’t they just a bit too old, too vintage, too out of date, too complicated, too last century, or even, too the-century-before-last-century? Well, not anymore.

Last year Apple updated the iPod Nano 6^th generation with additional watch faces in its watch function. One of which is the classic roman numerals. Such a classic watch face needs a classic watch case to match and celebrate, and the most classic watch of all time is, of course, the pocket watch. The idea of turning the iPod Nano into a multi-touch, multi-function, high tech, modern day pocket watch was born.

The classic men’s watch will always be the pocket watch. While everyone else wears the iPod Nano as a wrist watch, why not bring a bit of yesterday to your style and distinguish yourself from the rest of the world by fashioning this admirable iPW (iPocketWatch)?

DESIGN

The iPW (iPocketWatch) is a pocket watch case for the iPod Nano, manufactured from aircraft grade aluminum and hand finished to the highest standard (available in silver as standard. A special Black Edition can be ordered on request for an additional fee). Its simple design comes in 2 variants: the standard square fascia, and the interchangeable optional round fascia. Both of which will match many of the iPod Nano watch faces very naturally and perfectly. The subtle curves and compact size of the iPW (iPocketWatch) makes it very easy to put in and pull out of your jeans’ watch pocket (that small pocket above the big pocket on the front right side of every pair of your jeans. Yes, it really is designed as the watch pocket for your pocket watch, not for keys or coins). A 30cm long chain with a belt hook at the end lets you firmly secure the iPW on your belt.

While your iPod Nano is in the iPW (with Square Fascia), the touch screen, all the buttons, the head phone jack and the power/data dock are still fully accessible. And better yet, unlike most of the iPod Nano cases and watch bands, the clip on the back of the Nano will also be functional on the iPW, just in case you want to clip it on somewhere. There is however, a gentle reminder, while the "Round Fascia" is fitted on, for obvious reason, some of the touch controls displayed on the corners of the screen are not accessible, but most of the frequently used touch screen controls,such as swiping the screen, changing songs, scrolling the menu, etc. are within reach and functional.

With the iPW (iPocketWatch), you can enjoy the modern day technology with the exquisite style and class of the olden days.

As a young industrial designer, design and produce my own products has always been the dream of my life. I have really enjoyed designing this iPW, the one in the photos you have seen so far is the only prototype I have made. And I have been wearing this very pocket watch everyday. Every time I pull it out to check time, it feels like I’ve actually traveled back in time and the world become black and white. It feels, special.

The iPW is a time instrument; it is also a time machine. And here I am, sincerely inviting you to share this unique feeling with me. With your support, not only can we make this iPW a reality, but we may also, and this is just a hope, bring the idea of the pocket watch back to life.

WHERE THE FUNDING GOES

To design the iPW is one thing; to manufacture it is a whole other story. Here are two of most important areas where the pledge money will be spent to help to, hopefully, make the iPW appear in your hand in the very near future.

- Tooling & Development: Production test samples will needed to be checked and re-checked to make sure the quality of the final product lives up to your expectations

- Minimum order quantities: Factories will need a minimum order to start to make the product or the packaging of the product
