About the film:
Set in 1867, Quartermaine is the untold, true story of three bushrangers who escaped Fremantle prison and walked for three gruelling weeks to steal a great wealth from Quartermaine’s store. When they finally arrive at the store, they find no money - only lies, the police, and a special pair of pants.

Our story:
A few months ago, our director, Mason Fleming, stumbled upon an old newspaper clipping, which told the story of three convicts, William Graham, Thomas Scott, and George Morris.
From there the story sprang to life:

- We have a fabulous first draft script.
- We have secured actors from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
- Our crew is predominantly made up of students from the WA Screen Academy (WASA).
- Camera, sound and lighting equipment has been booked, and we have a shoot date set.

The final piece of the puzzle in obtaining realistic 1860s props and costume to do this remarkable story justice.

Test Shoot with Don McAlpine at Kalamunda History Village.

We have been very fortunate to be mentored by legendary Australian cinematographer, Don McAlpine (Predator, Moulin Rouge, Ender's Game, The Dressmaker).

CAST
Angus McLaren - William Graham
In 2014, Angus chose to study at WAAPA, seeking to improve his already established screen career with the rigorous and demanding skills required for stage work. His screen credits include lead roles in Packed to the Rafters, H20 - Just Add Water and Silversun. This year he performed the title role in William Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, a successful production which will be travelling to Greece in July to participate in the Hydra Festival.

Joel Davies - Thomas Scoot
Currently in his final year at WAAPA, Joel Davies will be playing the role of Thomas Scott in Quartermaine. Prior to drama school, Joel worked in film and tv, playing such roles as "Fingers" in Drown (by Dean Francis) and Conan in Slide (by Garth Maxwell). He has delivered notable performances onstage, as Mr Tulliver (Mill On The Floss by George Elliot), Rob "Soldier" (13 by Mike Bartlett) and Marco (A view From the Bridge by Arthur Miller).

Anneliese Apps - Emily Quartermaine
Anneliese has enjoyed performing a diverse range of roles since beginning her journey into acting. Her favorite theatrical experience is working on Shakespeare. Before attending WAAPA, Anneliese played Lady Macbeth and while playing that role discovered her passion for the theatre. Since then, she has further explored Shakespeare, having played lead women roles in Coriolanus (as the character of Volumnia) and Much Ado about Nothing (as the character of Hero).

Lachlan Ruffy - Inspector Piesse
Lachlan will be playing Inspector Piesse in Quartermaine. Before coming to WAAPA, he worked as an actor, writer, teacher and director, for over a decade in his hometown of Canberra. His notable stage roles include, Thomas Klopper in “The Book of Everything”, Don Pedro in “Much Ado About Nothing”, The Sailor in “The Good Doctor”, Bob Jakin in “The Mill on the Floss”, Stephen Crossley in “13” and he is currently preparing to play the omniscient Alfieri in “A View from the Bridge”.

CREW
Mason Fleming - Director
Currently studying Masters in Directing at the WA Screen Academy, Mason Fleming will be directing Quartermaine. Since a young age, Mason has been devoted to the idea of directing exciting films with a strong WA identity. While studying a Bachelor of Communications at the University of Western Australia, he directed multiple successful short films, and became the videography director for TEDxPerth.

Michael Boyle - Producer
Michael's background in Steiner Education has always surrounded him in the arts. His love for film and theatre led him to pursue a career in the film industry. He began his studies at Central, and is now completing his degree at WASA.

Emma MacMillian - Writer
Emma is the writer of Quartermaine, though she is known also as an actor, director, production designer, dreamer, amateur psychoanalyst, and jack of most film trades. Keen to learn as much as she can, she came to the Screen Academy in 2016 after finishing her degree in Screen Production at Murdoch University. Having worked in many amateur theatre and film productions, Emma now focuses on creating and formulating original processes and products of strong quality, whilst aspiring to get further experience as an industry professional filmmaker.

Joshua Hall Haines - Production Designer
Joshua Hall Haines is studying a Bachelors in Media & Communication at the West Australian Screen Academy. Quartermaine marks his first step in to Production Design, with a background in Art Department already established (A Few Less Men, Nobody's Child, and Library of Love). His eye for design was the drive behind the Revelation Perth Film festival trailer, which he directed, in 2015.

Shooting Location

We will be shooting in the Shire of Kalamunda, thanks to the support of Film Kalamunda

How The Funds Will Be Used

We need your help to bring the story to life. We have a great crew, talented cast, fantastic camera and sound equipment, but we need authentic 1860s props and costumes.

$500 - Costumes for main characters and extras
$400 - Props
$500 - Set Dressing
$600 - Replica guns (and possibly armourer/safety officer)

The Challenges

- Weather is often a challenge when shooting outside. We are working with an experience 1st AD to develop contingency plans for bad weather.
- Availability of period props and costume might be a challenge, but we have access to talented designers and crafts people from WAAPA and the wider industry, who can recreate items if they can't be found.
