G’day I am Tim Randall and I grew up swimming in organic rice paddies. Now I’m on a mission to help make the world more organic. Starting with making more organic brown rice cakes, as a wholesome healthy snack and to help support my parent’s organic rice farm, located in Murrami - in rural NSW, Australia (In between Leeton and Griffith).
For over 25 years my parents farm has been certified organic, as the 10 year drought ended 5 years ago we started milling our own organic rice, and packaging rice on our farm. 1 year ago we starting making a small amount of rice cakes as a trial - mainly selling them at Farmer’s Markets. Crispy and fluffy popped organic brown rice discs, with a delicious toasted rice flavour.
There’s a problem though… we can’t make enough rice cakes to meet demand - we regularly sell out at Farmer’s Markets and can’t keep up with store orders, and we hate disappointing people!
We want to increase production with 2 new rice cake machines. With this additional capacity we can make them even more convenient to you - we can stock them in stores and even sell them online.
It will help us become more financially resilient against drought, allowing us to produce more value out of the water we use to grow rice. This will significantly reduce risk which is inherent with farming. Hopefully it will allow us to grow our operation, integrate renewable energy more and make our farm even more sustainable and biodiverse.
We need to raise $18,000 to get another rice cake machine and $41,100 to get two! Can you help us?
Only with two could we base these rice cakes machines in Wollongong, NSW to make them local to Sydney, which would help immensely. It will help by greatly reducing freight costs, because NSW is so vast it makes it hard for our small family organic farm business to sell our produce. We also hope we can take one of the machines to farmers markets for one off demonstrations.
If we can raise these funds together we can build a healthy organic brown rice cake business and keep a great organic farm alive.
How are these rice cakes different
Our organic brown rice cakes are 8cm diameter discs of fluffy toasted brown rice, deliciously crispy and soft. They are made with the best fresh organic brown rice grown on our farm, as opposed to using old, broken or discarded rice which is common for rice cakes. The brown rice is freshly milled, a small amount of water is added to the brown rice, and then the machine uses heat and pressure to produce the rice cakes. We then hand pack the rice cakes into airtight packets - to keep moisture out!
They only contain brown rice so are perfect for celiacs, and people on fodmap and gluten-free diets. Each rice cake only is only 5g perfect to replace bread, as a snack with avocado, peanut butter or vegemite for a healthy snack. We have continually received positive feedback that they are far superior to other rice cakes because they are not chewy and have stronger toasted rice flavour.

Koshihikari (Japanese sticky short grain) (low to medium GI). This a lovely soft sticky rice with a great flavour. Available in white to semi-brown and brown. Great in risottos, rice puddings and sushi.
Langi (Australian Long Grain) (medium GI). Long grain fluffy rice with a great flavour in brown. Available in white to semi-brown and brown. Great in fried rice and along side of curries, stir fries.
Doongara (Low Gi Australian long grain). Fluffy rice when well washed, hard to overcook and low glycemic index. Available in white to semi-brown and brown. Great with curries and stir fries.
Jasmine (Thai long grain) (High GI).Fluffy when washed, wonderful fragrance and flavour. Great in Thai cuisine and alongside stir fries.

How The Funds Will Be Used
We need to import the rice cake machines from Korea, and purchase the peripheral equipment to make it safe, hygienic and seal them away from moisture.
The Challenges
Weather is the biggest challenge with farming and will affect the supply of organic rice for our machines but we should have enough water allocation for next year's crop, and can reduce the size of the crop considerably before it would reduce our rice cake production with only 3 machines.
The other challenge is finding a good home for the machines in Wollongong and transporting them to markets. Some markets might not have the machine for long due to noise and getting the right equipment to move the machines may be too costly.
