Did you know a wild elephant is killed every 15 minutes? Think about that. In the time it takes you to drink your next cup of tea or coffee, somewhere in Africa or Asia, a beautiful elephant will be destroyed. Perhaps it will be crudely butchered, its face hacked off with an axe and its body left to rot. And all of this will be to collect its teeth. Habitat destruction, human conflict and poaching for ivory are wiping out the world’s elephants at an alarming rate. One ... every ... quarter ... hour.

In 2014, photographer Bobby-Jo Clow and writer Dave Blissett, began working on a project that would help make a difference to elephants. Called Reflections of Elephants, we set out to combine Bobby-Jo’s stunning images with the written reflections of writers, poets, conservationists and elephant experts from around the globe. We received work from some truly incredible and inspiring people, including Bradley Trevor Greive, New York Times best seller and author of acclaimed books such as The Blue Day Book, Priceless and Penguin Bloom, multi-award winning poets and essayist, Mark Tredinnick and Tony Park, one of Australia’s most popular novelists.

The goal now is to collate these inspiring words and images into a beautiful book. Melbourne Books have come on board as our publisher, but we need your help. All contributors have donated their time and their work to this project. One hundred percent of author royalties from book sales will be donated to The Askari Project, supporting work in Tsavo, Southern Kenya to preserve wildlife, especially the magnificent elephants. Every dollar raised lowers the costs of book production, and means more money for the elephants.

Please join with us. Not only will you have the chance to be part of this project, you could earn wonderful rewards, and you’ll be helping us to help them. How many quarter hours do the elephants have left?

How The Funds Will Be Used

All the photographic and written content has been generously provided free of charge by the books contributors but producing a full colour photobook is an expensive undertaking.

80% of total funds received will be used to cover a portion of the production and printing costs of a 166 page, hardcover, full colour publication.

20% of total funds received will go directly to The Askari Project, who will continue to receive a portion of all proceeds from the sale of the book

Remember that even after this campaign has concluded, the book will continue to raise funds for elephant conservation as a portion of all sales will be donated. Your support of this project will not only benefit The Askari Project directly but by making this book a reality you will allow it to raise money long after the campaign has ended.

The Challenges

PRINT TURN AROUND TIME
As with any publishing project it takes time to produce, print and deliver the final product. We already have a finalised manuscript, which means that we can go to print soon after the campaign ends, but it will be at least 10 - 12 weeks before we receive the books. This means that we will need those who select a book as their reward to be patient in receiving them. Although rare, there are occasionally issues with the printing or shipping, which can increase the turnaround time to deliver the books.

SOLUTION
With over 15 years experience in the publishing industry, Melbourne Books has dealt with these issues before and is well placed to minimise the chances of anything going wrong and quickly remedying them if they arise. Further we will be completely open and communicate any issues quickly with any affected parties.
