It's Tim! For a Better Parliament

2016 is a Federal election year in Australia – which means you get to have your say about the kind of MPs you want to see in Parliament.

You can vote obviously, but if you really care about the kind of politicians we have in Canberra, you can take the next step and contribute to the election campaign of a candidate that represents what you want in our politics.

That's why we're asking you to support Tim Watts

Tim is a first term, Labor Member of Parliament representing Melbourne’s West.

He is a passionate opponent of family violence, founding the Parliamentarians Against Family Violence group, introducing a Private Members Bill criminalising ‘revenge porn’ and being a constant voice in support of gender equality.

He’s also spoken out strongly on issues including marriage equality, protecting our thriving multiculturalism, increasing Australian aid, defending the independence of commonwealth arts funding and improving Australia’s technology policy.

Tim with Melb's West Institution, The Snuff Puppets

Tim takes policy-making seriously – adding to his workload as an MP by jointly authoring a book tackling 20 year policy challenges for Australia with fellow first term Member of Parliament, Clare O’Neil titled “Two Futures – Australia at a Critical Moment”.

Since being elected in 2013, he’s been an active and involved representative of his local community. He's stood up for jobs in our region, fighting the closure of the Toyota Altona Plant and the Williamstown Shipyards and has fought Commonwealth arts funding changes with local organisations like the Footscray Community Arts Centre and the Women's Circus.

He takes a different approach to politics – trying to open up the system to involve as many people as possible in our democracy. He engages in depth with his electorate on social media and gives people a direct say in the decisions he makes (eg by allocating community grants through an online, public vote).

That’s also why his campaign team is launching this crowd-funding campaign – to try to do politics differently and give people outside the day to day political process a chance to support the re-election of the kind of MP that they want to see in Parliament.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Labor election campaigns run on thousands of hours of volunteer effort committed by ALP Members and supporters. Hundreds of volunteers fought the good fight for Labor in Gellibrand during the last election campaign and our activists will be the heart and soul of the next Labor campaign.

But the reality is that election campaigns cost money.

We need to equip our campaigners with the tools they need to campaign in our community. We want to be able to hold community events to energise our activists and to encourage more people to get involved with the campaign. We need to pay for banners, corflutes and flyers to help get the Labor message out. We need to advertise in the community, in local media and on Facebook.

It all costs money.

Even if you are not able to contribute financially, we would still love your support to help re-elect Tim to parliament. You can help by sharing this page to your friends on social media or volunteering for the campaign by signing up here.

Please Note: We will not accept any donations through Pozible that do not comply with Labor's fundraising code of ethics.

Authorised by M Nurse, 29 Blackwood Street, Yarraville VIC 3013.
