Erin, bump & ArtCalling all work-from-home parents! We are building a community of coworking parents in Preston, Melbourne!

Hi, I'm Erin Richards. The idea for Happy Hubbub came about after my second child (aka Big Bump in this picture). I decided to freelance instead of returning to my previous job; the childcare fees for two children versus what would have been a part-time editor's salary just didn't add up. I've never regretted it, but running a business from home while also looking after little people brought its own challenges: no additional childcare when the inevitable spikes in work came; getting frustrated with my children when I tried to get work done on 'their days'; burning the midnight oil because the kids hadn't taken their daytime nap... or because I had succumbed to sleep deprivation and napped with them.

One day, a mum online mused: "I just wish I could go to a cafe or somewhere, work alongside other women and look out the window to see our children being looked after by a proper child carer. Wouldn't that be lovely?"

Happy Hubbub began to take shape.

About Us

Erin RichardsErin Richards – Managing Director
A communications professional who once ran her business from home, in cafes, and out of a work hub, Happy Hubbub is Erin’s brainchild. Erin champions the value and virtues of part-time workers and business operators, and invites companies to work with Happy Hubbub to develop 'ramp-up' solutions for employees returning to work from parental leave.

Kirstin BoydKirstin Boyd – Childcare Director
Kirstin has spent more than 15 years in early childhood education, and is passionate about children learning through play. Kirstin believes providing an enriching and inviting environment allows children to explore their own interests and abilities freely and comfortably. She also believes building relationships with children is key to fostering their sense of belonging, self-confidence and continued interest in learning, and she looks forward to sharing in your child's journey at Happy Hubbub.

Coworking with Childcare

Happy HubbubHappy Hubbub will be Melbourne's first dedicated coworking space with on-site childcare – a shared office space with high-speed wifi internet, printing/scanning facilities, networking opportunities and, crucially, a short day care facility, allowing parents of preschoolers to work or study in the Hubbub with their children on-site but not under their feet, being looked after by qualified childcare professionals.

With more small businesses today being started by women than men – often part-time at first whilst juggling child-rearing – a Hubbub membership will help relieve the pressures of fluctuating business demands, especially as many long daycare centres are unable to provide additional care on an ad-hoc basis or at short notice.

The Hubbub will also be a valuable tool for employers who embrace flexible working arrangements. Allowing employees coming back from parental leave to work remotely out of the Hubbub will ease the transition back to work, enabling parents to get on with their job in a professional setting yet stay close to their child, drop the commute to work and facilitate continued breastfeeding.

Services:
• High-speed wifi internet
• Bookable meeting rooms and private offices
• Printing/scanning facilities
• Networking events
• Profile in hubbub business directory
• Kitchen with espresso coffee machine
• On-site short day care.

workshopsWe’ll also run events at the Hubbub with on-site babysitting available: book club, member networking, better-business workshops & seminars, meditation, yoga, language-learning, arts & crafts... The possibilities are endless!

Events with on-site babysitting will help parents – especially breastfeeding mums, single parents, FIFO (fly in, fly out) spouses, etc – to not feel so tethered to the home and isolated from the wider community. They will give parents the opportunity to socialise, pursue a hobby or interest, or further their professional development.

Memberships, Fees & FAQs

*All prices subject to GST.*

There are two membership types: Access (for the casual, ad-hoc user) and Regular (committed to weekly visits). Access members pay a monthly membership fee of $30 (or $300 annually) plus coworking fees for each visit. Regular members pay coworking fees only.

Coworking fees – e.g. for a day pass with 4hr childcare session (3hr session on Saturday) – start at $65 for an Access member, and get progressively cheaper per day for Regular members. Members can choose from a morning or afternoon childcare session with their day pass (9am–midday only on Saturday).

Coworking-with-childcare may also be booked flexibly by the hour Monday to Friday ($18ph), up to a maximum of 5 hours per day. A day pass with no childcare is $45. An additional child per hour/session is $7/25.

Hubbub Childcare

Hubbub childcare will be more than just a childminding service. We will be a fully licensed short day care facility* that incorporates early learning programs and development plans to chart the progress of our 'mini hubbubbers'. By operating a quality childcare service, members can confidently make coworking at the Hubbub part of their family's regular routine.

The childcare facility includes a lovely outdoor play area (located far from concentrating coworkers!) and the indoor area is one large, open-plan room with children's toilets/nappy change area, kitchenette and proper nursing chairs for mums wishing to breastfeed. For more on our childcare philosophy, see the website: http://happyhubbub.com.au/childcare.php

*Regulations for short day care stipulate maximums of 5 hours per day and 15 hours per week per child.

Coworking – The Spirit of Collaboration

We have to thank so many people for helping us get this far. To the Awesome Foundation for giving Happy Hubbub a $1000 grant to put towards this campaign's production costs; to LeapKids, Preston South Primary School and Red Bean Coffee for letting us film on their premises; to Lucy Birchley @ socialagent.com.au for filming and editing the video; to RTR Productions for providing and setting up the AV equipment for the live launch; to Veneziano Coffee for KeepCups, bags of specialty coffee and barista training session giveaway; to Hatch Ideas for the 'I'll have what she's having' pamper pack giveaway; and to our other sponsors who helped make our rewards that little bit more special – Croc's Play Centre (Reservoir), Reservoir Leisure Centre, RAD Fitness and Bottoms Up.

Finally, to the core Hubbub crew who believed in this venture enough to invest in it. And to everyone else along the way who gave words of encouragement, advice and support. Thank you!

Update

For all Tour and Test Drive rewards, anyone who becomes a member after their first visit to the Hubbub will receive the same membership discounts as per this campaign. (Access, Regular or Studio)

How The Funds Will Be Used

handsThis campaign is, at its heart, a membership drive. Our goal is to build our community to 100 members within 12 months; this is the point at which our vision becomes a viable, sustainable business. If we can get just 50 founding members in place now, we can really hit the ground running when we open in late January 2016.

The money raised will go towards running costs – boring stuff like rent, staff wages and utilities bills. However, if we reach our target and secure 50 founding members (Regular or Access), we’ll also commission a mural by a local artist for our community garden area, to which founding members will be invited to add their own personal touch (quite literally – it’ll be handprints a-go-go).

The Challenges

Happy Hubbub is definitely happening. The project is not contingent on the outcome of this Pozible campaign. Kirstin and I, along with a handful of other investors, have raised the capital required to lease the property, renovate and fit-out the space.

The main challenge for us is getting everything done – building works, fit-out, etc – in time to fully open by late January 2016 to coincide with the new school year. We are confident of our timeline but ... worst case scenario we would have to delay opening by a couple of weeks. (But rest assured we will bust our guts to meet our late Jan target! In fact, we are hopeful that we will be able to open the coworking side of things a few weeks earlier.)

Magnet & Meme

You are awesome, and we will tell you just how awesome you are on Facebook and Twitter. We’ll also dedicate a #FridayFunny meme to you, to really put a smile on that dial! Plus you get a Happy Hubbub fridge magnet – just what you need to display your little one’s latest artwork.
