"It will be the perfect guide. Please donate to help ensure Mairead's book is published - here's a natural winner." Bob Brown

"Byron Trails is a fantastic book celebrating what we have to offer, and providing clear and supportive information." Simon Richardson, Byron Shire Mayor

I created Byron Trails guidebook because I love the idea of giving people an experience of nature. I know how good it is for us to walk and to spend time in Nature. The research proves it. So I hope that through this guidebook people might experience a connection with nature that they'll want to repeat again and again. And if that gets people outdoors more often, then the book has been a success.

Exercise like walking is one of the best anti-depressants you can give yourself. And green exercise is like exercise squared! It reduces the stress hormones in your body and increases the happy hormones. Walking in nature is extremely good for us mentally as well as physically, and we need it more than we realise.

I've put a lot of energy into finding creative ways to lure people outdoors, the ultimate result of which is this guidebook.

This is what Bob Brown, former leader of the Greens had to say about the book:

"Byron Bay's front door opens onto world famous beaches but it has a more secret back door which opens inland to remarkable World Heritage rainforests.

Mairead plans a beautiful book showing how we can all get into this Byron hinterland with its stunning mountain peaks, waterfalls, wide river pools and wonderful wildlife, as well as how we can access some of the picturesque coastline close by: it will be the perfect guide. Please donate to help ensure Mairead's book is published - here's a natural winner."

I have personally found it difficult to locate information about walks in the Byron area which surprised me as it is the 2nd most visited town in NSW (after Sydney). So I decided to research and compile what’s out there myself. I've turned that research into a one-stop guide to the coastal and hinterland walks in Byron, Tweed, Ballina and Nightcap National Park.

I've aimed for simplicity and the book contains a chart that lists walks by length, difficulty, feature and location. It also lists the closest cafes to your chosen walk for a well deserved chai or snack afterwards. Byron Trails contains information about the area as well as tips for staying safe in the bush and is a complete resource for all levels, from the novice to the avid hiker.

I expect the book to be in print in Autumn 2016. It will be launched at an exclusive party that you won't want to miss in Byron Shire. Grab your place at the launch party in the $75 and upward rewards.

How The Funds Will Be Used

I see crowdfunding as all about rewarding creators and their supporters.

My goal is to reach $19,750 to pay for:
1) Map production, editing, design, formatting, printing, and shipping the first batch of books.
2) Shipping and delivering all the reward items.

Supporters like you can pledge various amounts that buy you the first signed book copies, the launch party (which I guarantee to be great), guided walks and the opportunity to have your logo on the guide.

You can also pledge an amount without choosing any reward if you wish or you can pledge an amount that's more than the value stated.

For every $100 reward chosen I will donate $10 to one of the following local charities:
~ Madhima Gulgan: Madhima Gulgan means "put track there". Madhima Gulgan Bush Regeneration provides employment for indigenous Aboriginal people who restore Lowland Subtropical Rainforest in Northern NSW.
~ Sea Shepherd Marine Conservation: Sea Shepherd works relentlessly to ensure the protection and safety of marine animals including the dolphins and whales that grace the shores of Northern NSW.
~ The Rainforest Information Centre: The Rainforest Information Centre in Lismore was born out of the successful struggle to save the sub-tropical rainforests of New South Wales in 1979-1981 and continues to protect the Earth's remaining rainforests.

5% of any ongoing profits from the book will be donated to local conservation and cultural charities such as the above.

If/when the campaign meets and gallops past its funding goal, all remaining funds raised will go towards promoting the book so that it can reach as many people as possible.

The Challenges

A potential obstacle to success with this project is getting the word out there to as many people as possible. Practically every person I have spoken to about the book responds in the same way: "I love to walk, I'd love a copy". I'm pulling out every marketing skill I have to reach out and connect with as many contacts as possible, through traditional media and social media. Any help you can provide will be very gratefully received.

The major work has been done on the book already, and when the book goes through the production stage delays are always a possibility, of course. The good news is that I am a very good organiser. My ultimate goal is to provide you with a quality product and I'll do my best to ensure that all production work is done well and on time. I'll keep you in the loop during the entire process, and if any problems crop up, I'll let you know, and tell you what I'm doing to resolve them.
