Quoll in the hand, worth 2 in bush
Although extinct in the wild on mainland Australia, Mt Rothwell, along with the Eastern Quoll Mainland Recovery Team, is breeding eastern quolls in captivity. They will be released into fenced conservation reserves where they are protected from threats such as cats and foxes. Mt Rothwell urgently needs to upgrade and expand the existing captive breeding facilities so that we can establish a population of founders for a new release into Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary (ACT) and Mt Rothwell's sister site, Tiverton (western Victoria).

In 2003, Tasmanian eastern quolls were brought to the mainland to establish a captive breeding program that has proved highly successful. Mt Rothwell's feral predator free fenced conservation reserve in Little River, VIC now supports a free-ranging, self-sustaining wild population of over 100 individuals. The program is so successful that we are now able to look to additional fenced reserves to further expand the mainland eastern quoll population.
With your support, we will upgrade existing enclosures and purchase new ones so that we can expand the captive breeding program so that one day, the Eastern Quoll population is large enough to give it the best possible chance at survival when reintroduced to the wild.
EXTENDED GOALS
The more funds we raise, the more enclosures we can build, the faster the captive breeding program can expand, the sooner wild eastern quoll populations can be established within protected fenced reserves.
Any additional funds will be spent on purchasing additional enclosures so that we can maximise the captive breeding program.
Mt Rothwell & its Landcare Volunteers
The Mt Rothwell Landcare Volunteers carry out almost all of the on-ground works. We manage the habitat, build enclosures, control pests, maintain infrastructure and monitor fauna populations.
Through the work that we do, Mt Rothwell
- is home to the only wild population of Eastern Quoll on the mainland
- supports 85% of the mainland Eastern Barred Bandicoot population (critically endangered on the mainland)
- has the most successful breeding program for Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies
- protects threatened flora such as the critically endangered Spiny Rice Flower
- is the only fenced functional ecosystem that supports apex predators such as the Eastern Quoll and Spot-tailed (Tiger) Quoll.
Our strong community of extremely dedicated and passionate volunteers have been integral to the successes of Mt Rothwell.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Here's a breakdown of how we will allocate funds:
$8,000 - Purchase and setup of 4 enclosures for a breeding pair to raise a family ($2,000 each)
$1,000 - Upgrade existing enclosures
$500 - Animal husbandry/veterinary equipment (e.g. vet checks, microchips, genetic analysis)
$500 - Pozible fee
