WHO ARE THOM AND ANGELMOUSE?:
Thom and Angelmouse is the collaborative art practice of Robert ‘Thom’ Smith and Harriet Body. We met in March 2014 when Harriet began volunteering at Studio ARTISTS, a collective of professional artists with disabilities in Hornsby managed by Studio ARTES. Recognising a strong connection between our concepts and methods of working, We formed Thom and Angelmouse (with the support of Studio ARTISTS and the ArtsNSW Artist Support Grant) and began developing our collaborative practice.

Thom and Angelmouse's practice involves using animation software to turn found objects, drawings, and photocopies of faces from magazines into videos that present abstracted images of moving trains. Trains feature strongly in our work and the significance of 'The Train' differs for both of us. Robert “Thom” Smith feels very emotionally connected to trains–to him they have faces, personalities and feelings. For Harriet “Angelmouse” Body, the train is a metaphor for a space of genericism in which individuality can exist. Their ideas combined present the train as a blank canvas that carries all manner of people and experiences. Thom and Angelmouse is a collaboration between a mainstream artist and an artist with a disability, we create work that explores difference and examines how empathy, kinship and equivalence is found between all human beings who live in the same world (or, to sick with the metaphor, catch the same train).

WHAT IT MEANS TO US:
Your donation will allow us to create, present and resolve our artwork to its very best potential. We have been given an entire room on Cockatoo Island so that we can realise our artwork to it's true, fully immersive self. Our involvement in the Underbelly Arts Festival is a hugely exciting opportunity for Thom and Angelmouse–We have been working together for over a year now and have created a body of work that we are so excited about sharing with you and an estimated 10,000 other people including industry representatives and other arts workers. Thom and Angelmouse fully support accessible venues and festivals and advocate for equality between mainstream and disability arts and we thank Underbelly Arts for their acknowledgement and support of this. Thank you so much for your support!!
WHAT IS UNDERBELLY ARTS FESTIVAL?
Underbelly Arts supports Australia's next great artists. Through providing unique and unparalleled opportunities to bold new artistic voices, Underbelly Arts facilitates risk taking and exceptional artistic endeavour. In 2015 Underbelly Arts is once again taking over Cockatoo Island and giving artists the chance to create and respond to one of Australia's most magnificent settings. These works will then be showcased as part of the Underbelly Arts Festival, a two-day celebration of process, new ideas and the best emerging experimental artists across Australia. The Underbelly Arts Festival will take place on August 1-2.
Thank yous
