The Rainbow Serpent program will support Indigenous youth (Aged 14-24 and both male and female) to play sport at the elite level in Australia by providing a mentoring and cultural learning program, which will include:
A 4 day cultural learning experience led by the Balunu Foundation (
www.balunu.org.au) in the Northern Territory
Regular health checks of the players by organising visits to the GP and other health services and the monitoring of an ongoing fitness regime
One on one mentoring of the youth by ex elite sports players
A buddy system so that the youth can provide support for each other
Quarterly group sessions to promote healthy lifestyle choices and to provide information session on mental health, healthy eating and financial literacy.
The funds will be used to establish the Rainbow Serpent program which will make it self supporting through management fees. The funds will allow Wikstarr Sports to become an accredited sports management agent and support 10 Indiginous Youth to attend a cultural camp in the NT. The budget is $30,000 which covers Accreditation Fees ($5,000); 10 participants to attend balunu ($20,000) and travel and for participants ($5,000).
The main obstacle to this program is funding. Terry as an ex athlete has the contacts, mentors, program framework and is currently mentoring and supporting 20 Indigenous youth. For the Rainbow Serpent program to be successful Terry needs to gain accreditation to become a player agent and to conduct a cultural learning experience in the NT. There is no Government funding available to support this program. Once accreditation is received Terry will be become a play agent to the Indigenous youth and the program will become self sustainable.
