One Step at a Time
‘Why are we doing this?’
We are a strong and experienced team, consisting of author Jane Jolly, illustrator Sally Heinrich and publisher Anna Solding from MidnightSun Publishing. We are dedicated to producing a beautiful hard cover children’s picture book, One Step at a Time. It is an exquisite picture book which tells the story of Luk, a young Thai boy, and his baby elephant Mali, who accidentally treads on a landmine. What follows is a story of courage, bravery and true love. The book introduces children to the devastation that landmines can cause but it is ultimately an uplifting story of compassion and friendship.

‘Why is it important?’
One Step at a Time is an important book because it handles an unusual subject in children’s literature. It is important not to shy away from difficult issues, to talk with children about the devastation that these horrible weapons cause around the world. It is also a lovely story, gorgeously illustrated.
‘Where did the idea come from?’
Jane Jolly wrote the touching story based on a real event. For the illustrations, Sally Heinrich has been inspired by her own travels in Asia. When the writer/illustrator team presented the idea to the publisher, she didn’t hesitate to get on board.
‘What does it mean to us?’
This is such an important project that all people involved are donating their time. MidnightSun Publishing has never before produced a picture book but we fell in love with the project and we are 100% determined to publish it. However, picture books are very expensive to produce and reaching our target in this campaign would really help towards production, distribution and marketing costs. Part of the proceeds for the book will be donated to SafeGround to help with their work against landmines.
Sally and Jane have been busy talking about One Step at a Time at the Children's Book Council Conference in Canberra 16-18 May 2014, getting positive feedback at every turn.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Proofs of the cover and the internal pages costs $153.
Shipping and delivery costs $2,150.
Reaching our target will mean that we don’t have to borrow money for printing and delivery costs. Contributing to our project is similar to pre-ordering the book and the number of books printed will depend on the funds raised, but we are positive that 5000 copies is the right amount for this amazing book.
What will we do if we reach beyond our target?
If we reach our target and raise even more funds, they will be used towards distribution, postage and marketing costs to make sure that we reach as wide an audience as possible. Once the book has been printed, we will donate part of the proceeds to SafeGround, which is an organisation working against landmines.
After all costs are covered, donations will go towards getting the book translated into the languages of the region where the book is set, Thai, Burmese, Khmer and Lao, and distributing it to children in the region.
Donations will also go towards travel expenses for Sally Heinrich and Jane Jolly to tour Australia to talk to children in schools about One Step at a Time.
