The Surry Hills Film Night: Free
Films To Make You Think was set up in 2013 by Sara Lubowitz and Diane Macdonald
in collaboration with Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre. We showed documentary films to capacity crowds
at the Centre on Crown Street in Surry Hills, Sydney.
The films we showed
included:
The Bully –
about bullying in schools
Access to the
Danger Zone – about the work that Medecins Sans Frontieres do in the world’s
worst danger zones
A Common Purpose
– about the death penalty trial in South Africa that changed the country
It’s a Girl –
about the injustice that girls and women face throughout the world
Guest speakers and
filmmakers were invited to each movie screening to talk in depth about the issues
discussed in the films and answer questions from the audience. Representatives
of OZ harvest, Australian Human Rights Centre, Documentary Australia, Medecins
Sans Frontieres, Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby and other organisations
attended the film nights.

We believe that everyone
should have access to film about issues that affect our world, and that is why
we are determined to continue the project in 2014. Here are a few films that we hope to show:
Outlawed
in Pakistan – rape and the justice system in Pakistan
God
Loves Uganda – religion and gay & lesbian people in Uganda
The
Finnish Phenomenon – education
Numbered
– tattoos and their meaning for Holocaust survivals
We want to continue to show
recent ground-breaking documentaries in 2014 and inspire people to get involved
with the issues and topics that are bigger than our own neighbourhood.
We need approximately $500 for each film night.
$300 will buy the film and rights to screen
$100 for refreshments. Each guest recieves a glass of wine and a bag of popcorn!
$50 prommotion
$50 staff costs

The risk is if this campaign does not succeed these films and their message will not be shared with the community.
