The 24 Hour Experience will be the most exciting participatory live art event that Australia’s cities and towns have seen.

The 24 Hour Experience is a utopian vision of a city: a series of 24 live works developed by artists and ordinary people who have been inspired by the poetic minutiae of everyday life. The event unfolds in real time, offering 24 distinct live works in a different CBD location on the hour, every hour, over a twenty-four hour period. It is designed as a major one-off happening; playful and provocative, it places everyday encounters and unconventional contexts at the centre of a unique performance event. The live works will be innovative and cross-artform, including elements of theatre, multimedia, visual art, performance, film, and dance.

The 24 Hour Experience Melbourne (2014) forms the prototype for a new model of arts engagement that will continue in Ballarat (2015) and Cardinia Shire Council (2016). The 24 Hour Experience Melbourne will be presented as part of the Festival of Live Art 2014 being convened by Arts House, Footscray Community Arts Centre and Theatreworks in March 2014. The 24 Hour Experience Melbourne will take place on the 27th March 2014 at various sites around Melbourne’s CBD.

The project in 2014 is a collaboration between a group of Victoria’s leading artists, and five community organisations. This project is overseen by Executive Creative Director Gorkem Acaroglu and Writer Raimondo Cortese, and key artists involved include Sapidah Kian, Susie Dee, Georgina Naidu, Penelope Bartlau, Jonathon Auf de Heide, Oscar Redding and Greg Ulfan. This project does not only reflect diversity in the creative team, it also reflects diversity in perspectives and diversity in artform practice.

The project’s five community partners in 2014 represent a diverse cross section of Melbourne’s residents. Project artists have already undertaken workshops with each of these partners to create live works during the first stage development of the project, and this will continue leading up to the premiere of the event. Our 4 community partners are:
• The Australian Multicultural Foundation
• Ozanam House
• Traveller’s Aid Australia
• Melbourne City Mission

Our aim in partnering with these diverse organisations is to connect and create meaningful dialogue between Melbourne’s multicultural communities and other community groups such as those from diverse religions, abilities and genders. These four organisations form a Steering Committee that drives and has ownership of the project. The five partners also work with the 24 Hour Experience team to engage members of their constituent communities to become participants in the project.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The funds raised in this Pozible campaign will be invested in a new website for The 24 Hour Experience. This will give the project a creative online presence, allowing us to present the 24 Hour Experience to the world. Our new website will host videos of works from the Experience itself, as well videos and material on the making of this innovative community arts project. It will integrate with our other online presences, such as our social media sites, raising our profile and increasing our ability to engage with our supporters. We will use our website to share what we learn from our exciting, groundbreaking project with other artists, community workers and the general public. Our website will allow the 24 Hour Experience to grow and thrive through our initial season in Melbourne, into our seasons in Ballarat (2015), City of Cardinia (2016), and beyond.

The Challenges

Staging a large-scale event over a number of sites in Melbourne, with a large group of artists and participants, is not without its challenges. However, the 24 Hour Experience team has prepared a rigrous risk management plan, and has implemented a system of ongoing evaluation to ensure all challenges are met as they arise. The project team has engaged David Glyn Roberts as the project’s independent external evaluator, to ensure rigorous and meaningful assessment tools are used to gauge how successfully the project has met its aims. David has over 35 years experience in research, consultation and performance information systems and is President of the Australasian Evaluation Society. The evaluation of The 24 Hour Experience utilises the processes and principles of Empowerment Evaluation. The Steering Committee made up of our community partners is evaluating the community engagement process by collating and recording anecdotal responses from participants. The creative team will evaluate the overall impact of the public outcome through critical reviews, audience surveys, anecdotal audience responses and peer feedback.
