Burringurrah Remote Community Women's Centre
Rebecca Milly Milly has been voluntarily running the
Burringurrah Community Kitchen for almost a year now. Each morning she
provides breakfast for over 40 school students and at lunch she provides
for the students and also the community's CDEP workers. Rebecca also
cooks for the elderly members of the community in what she calls, meals
without wheels. Being 460km away from the nearest regional town, we are very isolated and get cut off by floodwaters. A healthy eating program is very important to our community, but the fact that the community wants ownership and the ability to figure out their own way of creating sustainable projects means we are limited in terms of our Government funding options. Rebecca hopes this short video will help attract funding for a new commercial kitchen where young people in the community can undertake courses in cooking while feeding the community. Even a small renovation and new equipment (like sharp knives and more bowls/containers for freezing food) would greatly relieve the pressure on Rebecca and provide more opportunities to expand our healthy eating program in Burringurrah community.
