Etiko is the small pioneering fair trade company based in the backstreets of Northcote. Since 2006 we have led the way in developing and marketing great looking and good quality footwear and clothing ...which just happen to be as eco friendly and as ethically produced as you can get.
As a result of the work we've done we've won heaps of awards, including the Banksia Environmental Award for Business Sustainability and are even featured in a number of high school and university textbooks.
We've been wanting to extend our footwear range for quite a while and late last year came up with the idea for Thongs for Good.
The idea is pretty simple ....make the thongs (flip flops, jandles for all you non-Aussies who are sniggering):
ECOFRIENDLY - by using as much natural rubber as possible (from trees not petroleum).
FAIR TRADE - by not only ensuring that the manufacturer abides by local labour laws and by also paying a 15% social premium which is paid to the workers directly for their benefit.
Then we chose 4 Australian based organisations to raise money for. These organisations do amazing work in the fields of:
Child welfare (Save the Children)
Animal welfare (The Orangutan Project)
Environmental protection (Wilderness Society) and (Surfrider Foundation).
10% of the net wholesale value of each pair of thongs sold will go to them.
