Fire Rabbit - Short Film
Fire Rabbit
Fire Rabbit is an upcoming short film written and directed by Jack Wilson-Lee. It follows Sam, a Chinese-Australian boy in rural Victoria in the Great Depression. Throughout the course of a day, Sam and his brother James must scavenge for food while under threat from their violent, opium-addicted father. This film will explore the beauty of youthful innocence while contrasting with the stark, brutal reality of Sam's world.
Inspiration
The film is inspired by the childhood of the director's grandfather, George Lee. George grew up under extremely difficult conditions in Wangaratta. He and his brother would run through the Victorian bush, hunting rabbits and exploring the wild. To Jack, George's stories were always full of detail and atmosphere, painting rich tapestries of his Chinese and Australian heritage.
Cultural Impact
George's story is an important one. There is an underrepresentation of Chinese-Australian stories in the Australian media, and we strongly believe that films such as Fire Rabbit can help carry Australia to a more inclusive and multicultural future.

About the Crew
Jack is an enthusiastic director, cinematographer and colourist with a keen eye for intimate and considered imagery. He is arduously detail-oriented, passionate about producing the highest quality work. With post-production wrapping on his recent productions, Benediction (Director), Pugs Before Drugs (Cinematographer) and Feel No Suffering (Cinematographer), he is keen to get back in the director's chair to bring George's story to life.
Patrick is an energetic producer who spends most of his time unnecessarily nagging his fellow crew members! He is thrilled to be working with such a dedicated and passionate team. When he isn't on a film set, he can be seen furiously organising Excel spreadsheets. (... I'm a fun guy, I swear!)
Leo, the cinematographer, hopes to use his passion for visual storytelling to bring the story to life. He's very excited to capture the beautiful Australian bush. This script is an opportunity to tell a unique story and match it with equally unique visuals. He couldn’t have asked for better partners in this production and strongly believes that the synergy between the team will come out in the footage.
Carly is thrilled to be the production designer for Fire Rabbit. She believes that creating an original yet historically authentic style will be a challenging yet rewarding experience. She's excited to work alongside some very talented people for this very unique story!
Shenae began working in film in 2018, and has since worked on projects across a variety of genres and styles, with a focus on production design and sound design. With prior experience in producing experimental soundscapes, Fire Rabbit provides a great opportunity for surreal approaches to sound production. To date, she has worked on eleven productions, and she looks forward to making Fire Rabbit number 12.
As our editor, Alex is tasked with taking all of our efforts during production and moulding it into something amazing. His favourite part of the filmmaking process happens in the edit suite, wherein his opinion, the film starts to come alive. From the start, Alex has been enthralled by the story of Fire Rabbit, and he cannot wait to help finish it.
