Workers across the Retail and Fast Food sectors in Australia have had penalty rates taken from them through a series of dodgy deals. Over the past eighteen months this gained national attention. In May 2016, our team overturned the dodgy Coles Agreement which cut the penalty, overtime and other wage rates from 75 000 workers. Now we need to campaign to bring back the penalty rates at Coles, Woolworths, McDonald's and every other major employer in the Australian retail and fast food sectors.
We have established the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union as the union for all retail and fast food workers in Australia. We want our first major campaign to be focussed on taking back the hundreds of millions of dollars in penalty, overtime, junior, casual and other rates stripped from so many workplaces.
We are led by experienced campaigners Josh Cullinan and James Searle, industrial barrister Siobhan Kelly, and a team of fantastic activists determined to build a winning union of retail and fast food workers. Having spent the past 18 months exposing some of the most shonky deals which have stripped hundreds of millions of dollars in minimum wages from our lowest paid workers, now we need to stand up and take back our penalty rates!
Taking Back Our Penalty Rates is our first major campaign and we need your support to put campaigns officers on the ground. They will build our campaign to restore the penalty rates for some of Australia's lowest paid workers - to take back the most basic minimum Award entitlements. Support them, and support the millions of others that rely on penalty rates.
We will put campaigns officers on the ground working with retail and fast food workers. They will be building our campaign from the ground up - and building an unstoppable force to not only take back our penalty rates, but secure them for generations to come.
Right now the penalty rates of all Australians are under attack because more than half a million workers have already had them stripped by these dodgy deals. By Taking Back Our Penalty Rates, we will bring 500 000 retail and fast food workers to the fight to secure penalty rates for all.
Don't sit back and watch. Join us and fight back.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Your contributions will be used to employ two campaigns officers, each at 3 days a week in separate cities for six months to launch and build this campaign. We will also cover the costs of rewards.
- $20 000 for 1st campaigns officer (including on-costs such as tablet and phone)
- $20 000 for 2nd campaigns officer (including on-costs such as tablet and phone)
- $6 000 for Rewards (Tees, Stickers, Stubby Holders, Aprons, Soiree)
- $4 000 for Pozible Fees
Total: $50 000
Each additional $20 000 funds another campaigns officer.
Stretch targets will employ further campaigns officers in other major cities around Australia.
- Meeting a $70 000 stretch target will fund a 3rd campaigns officer in another city
- Meeting a $90 000 stretch target will fund a 4th campaigns officer in another city
- Meeting a $110 000 stretch target will fund a 5th campaigns officer in another city
- And so on.
Lost penalty rates in the fast food and retail sectors is one of the biggest stories of the past year. Doing something about it is a whole other task!
The Retail and Fast Food Workers Union is equipped to lead this campaign but it relies on thousands of ordinary working Australians getting involved as well. Together we can make a real difference. We will need to mobilise massive support amongst workers and their families to influence politicians and employers.
This project is just the start!
