The Rose is a universal symbol that has a resounding meaning to each person. Historically, they are the most popular flower in the world and they have been prized for thousands of years throughout a wide range of cultures.
Their form, colours and beauty have inspired me to paint these iconic flowers.
‘The Year of the Rose’ will span over 365 days; I will paint or draw one rose per day from April 22nd, 2013 til April 21st 2014.
My personal connection to the rose has been the biggest force in creating this project; I was born ‘Sheree Rose Troy’ on the 15/1/1990; the name Rose was passed down from a great aunt who’s name was Mildred-Rose, which when broken down was pronounced ‘Mild Red Rose’. My relationship with my grandmother also inspires me to take on this project, as the Rose was a strong symbol in her life as she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and suffered depression. My grandmother planted a pink rose outside of her bedroom as a reminder of hope and love in her life. She passed away in 2009 and since then members of her family have taken offcuts from this rose and continue to grow her rose in their gardens as her legacy.
The artworks will be exhibited and sold throughout the year and a final exhibition aims to bring all the work together for a final show. Depending on the demand of exhibiting space, the exhibition may tour a number of locations across Wollongong, Shellharbour, and the Southern Highlands.
The Illawarra Rose Society is assisting me in this venture. This allows me to work with the society while promoting their locally grown roses, and gaining knowledge about the rose itself.
On average, to hire a gallery for one week in the Illawarra is $300. No to mention the cost of printing promotional material for the exhibition ($150), Opening night catering costs ($100) and gallery commission from sales (20%). My community inclusive project is one that a lot of people endorse and respect, however, I can not do this alone financially. So far, my project is self-funded, but I am making this call-out to the community to help me make the year of the Rose more successful. I want to share these artworks with the public, and to see them hanging on the walls of public galleries.
