WHAT THE HEY?
Wool for Women is a series of creative workshops designed to build and sustain creative confidence, practice and livelihoods. The project is run by Melbourne based creative community organisation Aware. In July 2013 Aware will be running Wool for Women with a group of women artisans in Kampot, Cambodia.

WHY?
Accessing quality education in regional Cambodia is extremely difficult. Vocational training is the preferred option for many adults but attendance costs families a significant proportion, if not all, of their income and prevents people from earning a wage. The sacrifice of attending training when it is available is made more difficult by the fact that young adults often support their parents and siblings or have families of their own.

Employment opportunities in regional towns are limited and women often end up migrating to bigger cities to work for garment factories in sweat shop conditions. A small income may be earned, however is quickly spent on accommodation and food, and sent home to families. And so the cycle of poverty continues....

ABOUT WOOL FOR WOMEN
Wool for Women helps to build and sustain creative confidence, practice and livelihoods for women through creative workshops.

In July 2013, Aware will run Wool for Women with women who work at Dorsu, a social enterprise in Kampot, Cambodia. Aware will be partnering with Dorsu to help train staff in crochet. Dorsu has requested support in expanding their product range and learning new skills. Aware will work alongside Dorsu staff to continue to build strong relationships and improve skills. We will also support the Dorsu manager and senior staff to price products and create learning manuals and resources for teaching staff in the future.

The women attending Wool for Women will do so as part of their job at Dorsu, and so will not have to sacrifice their income to attend. Opportunities for training and income in local communities means women do not need to leave their home towns in search of employment and risk exploitation.

Objectives
1. Provide opportunities for participants to engage in creative activities and self-expression.
2. Enhance the craft skills of participants.
3. Increase the creative livelihood capacity of project participants and Dorsu.

Wool for Women was run with Dorsu for the first time in 2012. After its success Dorsu has requested further support in 2013.

ABOUT THE PARTNERS...
DORSU
Dorsu is a social enterprise operating in Kampot, Southern Cambodia. It has a shop that sells clothing and souvenirs to tourists and offers wholesale sewing services to local and international businesses.
Dorsu provides a safe and positive work environment, regular hours, breaks and meals to the women that work there. Staff receive secure employment with a competitive salary and training in clothing production and customer service. By meeting these immediate needs, staff can comfortably learn, work and express creativity in their daily lives – benefits that are not provided in factories and many other work places in Cambodia.
Dorsu began in 2008 as a creative idea for income generation at Chumkriel Language School (CLS), a locally operated community based organisation. Proceeds from Dorsu store sales are given to CLS to support the education and assistance they provide to the local community.

AWARE
Aware is a not-for-profit Melbourne based creative community development organisation committed to bringing about positive change in the lives of individuals and communities through creative practice. We currently support and facilitate creative activities with women and children in Australia, Cambodia and Kenya with the aim of increasing the self esteem of participants and building awareness of the issues faced by these young people in the wider community.

Aware is 100% volunteer run. Any support you give will directly fund Aware projects.

THE BUDGET
Our Pozible target is $2,500 (we are starting safe and smallish) but the total project budget is closer to $4000. This will cover the costs of travelling to and staying in Kampot, and materials for running the workshops. Any funds received above the target will go towards the full funding of the project or towards supporting Aware's other projects in Kenya and Australia.

YOUR MONEY WILL….
* Make the project possible.
* Help increase the creative practice and earning capacity of women and families in regional Cambodia.

THANK YOU...
