The story for 'Splendor Solis' grew out of a personal philosophy I have. I grew up in Canada before moving at a young age to Australia, and I've always felt at home amongst the mountains, forests and nature; it's where I feel most content. I know I'm not the only one out there who gets a bit stressed by the hustle and bustle of city life...as much as I love my laptop, iPhone and soy lattes the idea of returning to a simpler, natural world is enticing.

With this film we're using a fantasy setting and exaggerated characters (the unhappy King who represents civilization, greed, power, and the Free One who represents the natural world, freedom) as a sort of allegory, pointing out that our connection to the world is an important one. Over the course of the film the King leaves the Kingdom, strips his symbols of power and returns to a simple world. It's a basic story, but the best ones always are!

There are definitely environmental themes to the script, with the presence of pollution and a desolate world, but our focus is the human journey and the exploration of happiness. This human element will make the story much more engaging and relateable, and will stop the central message from being overstated.

Why 'Splendor' Solis?

Despite being an Aussie production, we're using the Latin spelling of 'Splendor'. The title refers to an Alchemical textbook of the same name from around 1532 BCE. 'Splendor Solis' actually translates to 'The Splendour of the Sun', a fitting line which will become apparent in the film's climax!

Some Of My Previous Work

David C Mahler began directing music videos at the age of sixteen before moving into the field of animation and finally short film production. In 2010 he directed a French-language short film, 'Sans Pitié', in Paris which led to his being accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts. Over the past two years he has directed four short films, crewed on seventeen, directed a further three music videos and commerical work for clients such as the This is NOT a Film Festival and ANZAC Appeal. In addition to filmmaking, he has self published a series of independant comic books. His first graphic novel, 'Deep Park', was released in 2013. In June 2014 he will be flying to Suzhou, China, where he has been accepted into a two week film making scholarship.

How The Funds Will Be Used

The largest portion of our budget, $6,000 will be going towards set construction. We’re building two particularly large sets; the King’s concrete bed chamber, and the top of a mystical mountain, complete with geodesic dome. These two fantastical scenes are particularly important to the narrative, and as such we want as much control over them as possible.

$4,000 will go towards a professional sound design and mix. Dialogue is used sparsely in Splendor Solis as I’m a strong believer that actions speak louder than words. A perfect sound design that heightens and progresses the film’s narrative will be an integral component.

$1,500 will be reserved for costumes. We’re going for Marie Antoinette meets Moebius, a unique and lavish design choice that will elevate our production visually and turn what could be a basic genre flick into a considered, artful film.

$1,300 will go towards catering. A large production means a large crew, so there’ll be a lot of mouths to feed.

$700 will be reserved for additional fees such as pozible and paypal charges, as well as paying for rewards such as DVDs and the film’s art book, and covering reward postage.

The Challenges

The biggest challenge for our team will definitely be set construction and production design. Our crew has been specifically chosen based on past work, as we will need a high level of professionalism to create the fantastical world we envisage. Two main sets will be constructed, each with their own unique challenges. How on earth are we going to build an entire mountain top in a studio? Stay tuned as we figure it out!
