This year after saying goodbye to the Barons of Tang I will be embarking on a 6 month musical discovery of my mother land including 2 and a half months studying with Andres "The Turk" Gil at the Academy of vallenato in Valledupar,Colombia. The rest of the time i will be searching for and visiting other teachers to learn different styles of button accordion and attending a plethora of folkloric music festivals.
heres a list of links to a few festivals i wanna visit although you may have to hit translate on most of them:
The point of all of this is to develop the skills and gain the inspiration to create my own compositions following in the tradition but revolutionising the styles of folkloric and afro colombian music that i love, into something that has not been heard before. The working title i have for this project is "Impossible Monsters"
I will facilitate a core group of like minded and creatively ethical musicians and hopefully find ways to fund further explorations to Colombia and the Americas in order to get the traditional elements solid enough to break the rules in a precisely extraordinary way.
After my stint in Colombia in 2011 I had a few songs up my sleeve and in between performing and writing with the Barons of Tang I have been working on refining these songs as well as searching for the right people to play with. I met a Colombian bass player by the name of Maicol Garzon who has been living in australia for a few years and I also have asked my good friend Zak Pidd to be involved. We have been having a series of relaxed rehersals and percussion workshops over the past few months and this project is well under way, I just need some solid skills to make it all come together.
All up I plan to raise $3000
I have already bought the tickets to colombia and back
so its really just the flights to Valledupar, roughly $270
2.5 months of lessons plus enrollment fee exactly $1993.78 (at the current exchange rate)
and accommodation for roughly 85 days at about 10 bucks a day so around $850
If by chance people decide to pledge more than the allocated $3000 the money will definitely be going towards Travel costs to get to other festivals, accommodation for the other 3 and a half months ill be in colombia, further lessons with other teachers and maybe a few arepas to keep my belly full while practicing.
