My project is all about getting 400 trees planted in the Kinglake and Marysville district of Victoria.
We all remember the devastating fires of Black Saturday cross Victoria in 2009. It was one of the the hottest weekends on record and the temperatures soured into the 40s. The Kinglake and Marysville district of Central Victoria were particularly hard hit.
Three years on and the landscape is slowly recovering with the help of many community groups and networks.
But the region still needs our support.
Who will plant? The trees will be planted by Chris Cobern of the Upper Goulburn Landcare Network (and his band of volunteers). Last year Chris' group won the 2011 Victorian landcare Awards. So, this group know what they are doing. Re-vegetation has already begun in earnest in this district, with much of it co-coordinated by Chris.
Where will the trees come from? Trees will be sourced from Steve and Heather's Trees, a small independent native nursery in Flowerdale. The nursery gathers much of its seeds from the local area to propagate. The trees selected by Chris will be native and indigenous to the region.
Who am I? My name is Colleen Filippa and my background is in education and sustainability. I have been in the environment movement since the Franklin River Campaign (Tasmania 1982) and am an active member of environmental networks and landcare.
I run a green business called Fifteen Trees which is location in the Central Highlands region of Victoria. I help companies and individuals
reduce their carbon footprint by organising trees to be planted on their
behalf. To date, Fifteen Trees has helped plant over 15,000 trees, with most of the trees being planted here in Victoria. Via my website, supporters get to see their trees and read the stories behind the community groups who have planted them. www.15trees.com.au
The Rewards. It is all pretty simple. One tree will cost you $5.00. Two trees will cost $10.00. Three trees .. well you get the picture! I need to raise $2,000.00 within the next 40 days to get these 400 trees planted. Once planted, you will get to see your trees via the Fifteen Trees website and read the story behind those who planted them.
Any extra money raised with go towards more trees for this district. If this project is successful, I have my sights on raising funds for more trees in 2013.
