Australian band Splurge is marking its 15th anniversary by making its fourth album. This is a significant step for us because after our third album The Cure For The Cure was released in 2007 the odds were stacked against ever recording another one. This one really was the proverbial ‘difficult third album’—with band members scattered around the world and life events aplenty, it took two years to record, a year to mix and then didn't see the light of day for a further two years as it looked for a label to call home.Didn't stop, didn't start…

Back to The Cabin…
Still, it took another year before we could all get back in the same place to start playing songs. In the last half of 2012 we rehearsed a bunch of new songs and then went back up to The Cabin twice to record demos. ( Lots of Cabin demo and pre-production photos in Flickr…) All this year we have been playing and editing and refining the songs, culminating in more pre-production Cabin sessions in September.

More About The Cabin…
The Cabin is a key ingredient in all our work—we have been coming to this 1970s log cabin in Hall's Gap to write and rehearse and record since our first album. The Two Gregs—Williams and Arnold—recorded an acoustic album there; every Splurge album has tracks that were recorded there, in whole or in part, beds, singing, guitars… Recording there is a luxury we can afford! The sound of the room, the vibrations, and the voodoo make their way into our records. Put Yourself In The Room!
This record will be started and finished in a studio; in between—as always—there will be Cabin sessions. From the start, we wanted Wait For The Sun to be a record of the band playing songs we believe in, with all of us in the same room! We want you in the room too. Regular updates will keep supporters posted on the making of the record as it happens, with photos, videos and exclusive track previews.
We are now ready to record. But don't just take our word for it, listen to the work-in-progress demos…
The Challenges
Splurge has a track record of making high quality recordings with limited budgets. Our first two albums were completely self-funded. Our second album achieved an independent label release, went to its second pressing and was relased in the UK. Our third album won partial support from an Arts Victoria grant, and was released on an independent label to international acclaim.

City To Country…
This project takes advantage of our experience as band and knowledge of the recording process. First, there is time in the studio to record beds (three days), followed by location (at home and in The Cabin) editing and overdubs (five days), and then back to the studio for final mixing (two days). The mix of studio and location-based recording has been tried and tested on our three previous albums. We'll keep you posted with regular updates here and on Facebook. Like Us!
Sounds Like A Band!
After studio recording sessions, each track will be mixed down to a ‘stem’ which provides the reference sound for additional tracking. Having a great-sounding mix of the track to work with away from the studio means you can hear if everything works together straight away. This method focuses on the sound of the band and keeps that at the forefront from start to finish; Likewise, the mixing process is accelerated by the use of ‘stems’.

We are well prepared to record these 12 songs in the studio time allocated, having rehearsed and refined the material over the past year. Should more time be required in the editing and overdub stage, the overall project is not at risk because we work ‘on location’ at The Cabin or at home. The mixing strategy is to focus on a core band sound, rather than different approaches for each track, making it possible to complete mixes in two days.
