Homesick is a feature length documentary film about four homeless friends whose lives take a turn for the better when they are told they are to be part of a bold new housing initiative. After living for years in the chaotic and sometimes violent world of their South Melbourne rooming houses Sue, Grant, Lee and Ingrid are given a chance to create a home where they can re-build their lives. Their compelling story is based on the central dramatic question; Will having a place to call home be the catalyst for positive changes in their lives?

While following our characters' journeys over four years, they have allowed us intimate access into their worlds, courageously revealing the emotional and psychological impact of living without a home. The upheaval of moving again and again takes its toll, but when our characters finally get to move into their new accommodation, the results are both interesting and surprising. This is a story that interrogates the real meaning of the word home.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Why we need your help

After filming and editing for over four years we now have an 84 minute rough cut of the film. Our goal now is to complete a fine cut of the film including the final music score, sound mix and colour grade. We want this film to reach as broad an audience as possible so it needs to be produced to the standards expected by television broadcasters and film distributors. To get there we need your help.

We have some very valuable grants and financial contributions up until now but a significant proportion has been achieved without funding. Help us raise the amount we have requested because it will enable us to complete the final stages of post production which includes some unavoidable and absolutely necessary costs. Please get involved and remember that every little bit helps and we will make every dollar count.

The Challenges

Since commencing production of Homesick in 2009 we have overcome a number of obstacles in getting to this final stage of the project. Besides a short fall in funding at critical moments in production we have managed to continue filming and editing thanks to the commitment of the team and some generous financial support from a range of different sources. At a certain point in the project we realised that we had come too far to stop. Too many people had invested their time and money in the project and above all we knew we had a great story to tell.

Making a documentary film about an issue such as homelessness presented us with some real challenges other than financial. Our characters were often focused on just getting through their day and resolving the many conflicts they were constantly faced with. The last thing they wanted was a camera crew imposing themselves on an already complicated timetable. Nevertheless, thanks to their incredible generosity we found a way to work with them through the hard times - most of the time.

So in fact most of the "hard" work has been done. We have managed to overcome all the obstacles we were faced with and now only need to complete a successful Pozible campaign to reach our final goal. We are determined to get there and with your help we will.
