Pax Jakupa Jr is a talented young artist from Goroka in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Pax paints during the daytime in the doorway of this hut because he has no electricity. There is also no running water. This is his third hut he has built himself in the last ten years. The previous two were destroyed: one by fire and the other was washed away during a wet season.

Pax has been invited to attend and present at the Pacific Arts Association Symposium in Vancouver, Canada in August 2013. Leading up to, and during, the Symposium some of his paintings will be on display at the Museum of Anthropology. This is not only a great honour but also a wonderful opportunity for Pax. We are seeking funds so that Pax can make the most of this chance.

The Canadians have generously provided his airfare and he will be put up in the University’s Halls of Residence. However because Pax lives a subsistence lifestyle he has no money available to take with him. He also has family responsibilities. He has a daughter, an elderly mother and he is entrusted with the care of the children of his deceased sisters.

Pax doesn’t own a camera, the internet is a 90 minute walk away and is intermittent and expensive. It has been an effort to organize this once in a lifetime opportunity.

With your help this young man can share his art with his widest audience so far and continue to build on the momentum that this visit to Vancouver will create.
