Help us build our community, our premises and our impact!
Why?
We want to demonstrate to more people that there are ways to do business that have positive social impact.
How?
Through running our social enterprise café on Bourke Street and involving our community in our trials, tribulations and successes WE demonstrate a new way of doing business.
What?
Over the last 3 and a bit years hundreds of volunteers have engaged in our unique model, each coming for their own reasons and leaving with another. Together with the immense support the community has extended, we now run a viable social enterprise and according to our customers nominations over $65,000 has been distributed to our project partners. Hundreds of volunteers have been involved and benefited from our volunteer training program - collectively they have provided an enriching experience for customers who frequent the café.
What we need?
We need a bigger space, we need a proper kitchen and we really want to create more opportunities for our staff and volunteers so we can raise more money for our project partners.
The quotes from our contractors & suppliers come in at approx $120,000, a big portion of which was supported by a $25,000 Social Enterprise Expansion Grant with the City of Melbourne and the remainder that will be covered by the landlord and amortised into our future lease. So we need to raise $60,000 to achieve %23morekinfolk. We need commercial kitchen facilities and we need more space. This $60,000 will allow us to take on a lease of the 27m2 behind Kinfolk’s current premises and install a commercial kitchen. This will include:
·A commercial dishwasher
·A combi-oven
·Gas cooktops
·Lots more bench space
·Better flow &
·More functionality and space in our coffee section
This expansion will mean so much for all of us! It will mean:
·Opportunities for growth for all our paid staff
·Lots more opportunities for our volunteers, including roles in the kitchen
·Expanding our catering side of the business
·30% increased seating & lots more food options for our customers
·Ability to raise more profits for our project partners
·And the ability to build on all the great and diverse things that come out of Kinfolk.
We will even be extending our trading hours to include weekends some time after the expansion which will make the café accessible to all those customers who cant get there Monday-Friday.
Together we are more than capable of achieving this. After all we have done it once before – and that time, none of us even knew if this would work – we were basically a bunch of kids playing shop. We know it works now – it has exceeded all our expectations this last three years & without a doubt the future is bound to do the same.

So why Pozible?... and What’s Pozible?
Kinfolk was established by the community and for the community. When we were building the café, 3 and a half years ago, hundreds of people volunteered their time, services and products to help establish the café. In the end we opened the café for less than $10,000 of capital. This community support set the foundation of what was to happen. Since then such diverse and inspiring connections have been built and the place is a home and place of nurture for many. It’s really more like a family than a café for those involved, that said we are also utterly passionate about our food, coffee and the raw ingredients that we use and we pride ourselves on providing an awesome an unforgettable cafe experience!
Kinfolk has quite literally outgrown our four electric stovetops, electric grill and limited space and we need to grow to allow people to experience it what we love to do and create. Just now whilst writing this out the front of Kinfolk two groups of customers waiting out the front said in conversation that they often try to come here but they usually can’t get in at lunch time. We want to make Kinfolk accessible to more – afterall it is for everyone. We want to build our community, our premises and our impact. Wonderful stuff has happened from this humble little café and we are sure that lots more will happen once we have a bigger space and more equipment!
