The Zine and Independent Comic Symposium (ZICS) is a 3-day event to be held in Brisbane, Australia at The Edge on Friday 30th Aug, Saturday 31st Aug, & Sunday 1st September. The event aims to provide a forum for the talents involved in independent publishing within Brisbane and across the nation.
The event will feature a Friday night launch event including The Bedroom Philosopher in his only Brisbane show (as well as a guest panelist on Saturday) along with games, The Golden Stapler Awards and opportunities to network and socialise with artists and writers.
On Saturday and Sunday there will be a zine and comic fair where local and interstate artists and writers will have their creations for sale and trade. Along with this a range of workshops and panels will be conducted - from beginner guides on how to make your own zine or comic, to advanced master classes. A range of evening events are also planned including music and new publication launches!
'What's a zine?'- Zines are like magaZINES except they are self published and independently produced. They can be about anything and are usually only printed in small numbers.
ZICS is a not for profit community collective, all run by volunteers who want to put on an event different to the usual conventions. ZICS is about people’s passions and engaging with the community. There won’t be any cosplay or bakesales. We want this event to be about more than navel gazing or money. This is the chance for local artists to show their skills and wares, and it’s a chance for the wider community to find out about independent publishing and the talents in Australia. But we need your help!
Our fundraising goal is $8000. This amount will allow us to cover the cost of the venue hire and associated staffing. To provide drinks and food on the Friday night launch event and to cover the performance fees. We also aim to provide financial support in the form of a ZICS bursary, to guest speakers and workshop presenters, particularly those traveling interstate. We want ZICS to be the major zine and indy comic event in Queensland if not Australia, so attracting talents from across the country is important.
All money raised will go into the event, the more generous you can be the better our event will become. As we’re a community group trying to get ZICS off the ground we thought it best to turn to the community to help us do this. We have a range of great rewards so please help us make ZICS a great event.
